Journo has epiphany: ad revenue has gone direct from journos to google/FB

Realizes with horror that google and FB were the enemy all along
Summarizing the article:
Ad revenue was the lifeblood of journalism for centuries.
Newspapers and news media have seen ad revenue decline as google and FB consolidate the market.
Now google and FB control the internet, because they control the money.
Journos are stripped of any independent income, it all must go thru the ad gatekeepers. They are slaves to Cupertino.
I wish I’d been in the room when this journo had his moment of true clarity, when the companies and people he thought were his friends had actually ripped away his whole life.

This is the first presidential election happening after the business model for journalism collapsed.
Speaking as someone who worked in the news media industry in the past, this comment is absolutely stupid. The collapse started in earnest 15 years ago. It seemed like every 1st quarter board meeting involved an explanation of why we were writing down goodwill. Again.

I think he’s referring to the mass layoffs with buzzfeed and the like at the beginning of the year.

Maybe if the journalists had taken the advice and learned to code, things might have been different.

Meanwhile while all the freelance journalists in California were looking for Russian collusion with Trump California passed Assembly Bill 5 which will for all practical purposes eliminate freelance journalism in California.
