Isn't Russia bound by the same treaty?

Yep, and from Putin's perspective, Russia is the only treaty member who has moved in to assist in Ukraine.

This isnt the 80's. the global economy is much more interdependent now.

Sanctions can have the desired effect if they strong enough and have wide enough participation.

Unfortunately i think they will fall short on both counts.

But hit Putin's Oligarchs in the pocket and the internal support for him will sour quickly.

They like their opulence in russia.

Without enough background, it sounds like if Alaska wanted to leave the US and join Canada. No one should care except the US and Canada.

A better analogy would be if canada marched troops into Alaska and then Alaska declared it was joining canada.

Welcome to the 80s

Not so, because the USA is unilaterally disarming itself down to 1918 levels of force size and readiness while RUSSIA re-arms and energizes its armed forces.

Not the 80s at all. The US did not unilaterally disarm itself back then.

Pretty sure the US was pretty involved globally through the entire period you reference.

What in the frick are you talking about?

During the Cold War, the worst thing any President did when Russia invaded or meddled in the affairs of its neighbors - whether it was Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, East Germany or Afghanistan - is issue statements of condemnation.

voting for the Iraq war doesn't make you a neocon

That's true, but I think deep down Hillary is a neocon but she knows she has to keep her true feelings under wrap if she doesn't want to anger the Democratic base. I think Kerry probably voted for the Iraq war because he lacked the courage of his convictions at a time when he thought that a "no" vote would hurt him Presidential prospects. However, Joe Lieberman was probably one of the most hardcore neocons in all of Congress despite being a Democrat.

A nuclear Ukraine that is EU friendly would scare the shite out of Russia, plus a return to our plans with missile shields in Poland. Begin bringing Ukraine into NATO and see how bad Putin wants to hold on to Crimea.

Putin would react to any U.S. attempt to put nuclear missiles in Ukraine about the same way JFK reacted to the Soviet attempt to put nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Hillary, Kerry and a lot of others voted for the war so they could later claim to be 'moderates' instead of 'liberals'. Just posturing for future elections.

That would be cruel and unusual punishment.
