what i'm saying is that if unclaimed property is supposed to be this untouchable escrow-type thing solely to be held for rightful owners to reclaim, their funding probably shouldn't come from that money either. it should come from the main pool, like most agencies.
In a perfect world, yes. However I do see why the Treasurer's office would take some for operations. That's generally how they operate as they get zero general funds.
They would argue it's because as an elected official they don't want to be too beholden to the governor and/or legislature to threaten to take their budget. I generally don't buy that argument, but I have to acknowledge that there is at least something there.
I am OK with him getting an amount to administer the program but that amount could be left up to the legislature to set rather than put it in the constitution.

yeah, they should have to go ask for the legislators for money and justify their cost like most of the others have to (and all of them should have to).
eta: i'm not sympathetic to the elected official argument, at all, because it's insane that he's an elected official anyway. that office wouldn't miss the tiniest beat if he were a professional rather than a politician. or if he were gone altogther.

Every governor before him including 8 year Republican Jindal has done the same thing. It's the Pot calling the Kettle black.
My memory is foggy, but I believe the current Treasurer, during his time as a State Rep, opposed Jindal using that money on the Gen Fund as well.

I’m asking in today’s day and age why can’t the rightful owners be contacted by the private firms that once held it. Why does the state get it?
The private firms do attempt to return it. Do you have any idea how many people live from place to place every 6 months? How about how many people switch phone numbers. The unclaimed property fund is a way for the private firms to get the money out without holding on to funds forever.

Would you rather the private firms hold/steal the money? there has to be some mechanism for disposition of the funds.
If you die with no will and no heirs, your property goes to the state. It is not hard to understand.

So the present Treasurer is refusing to do what every Treasurer has historically done, and that is Edwards' fault?
You idiots need to get a life.

LOL. Coincidentally, I'm filling out forms right now to claim almost $400 I found out about this weekend.
The amount of information they are asking for to prove that I am who I am is astounding. They also want family members info.
Yet if I was an illegal alien wanting welfare and the right to vote, JBE would bend over backwards to help me.

The Treasurer is rarely more than a highly paid figurehead. Professionals run the office, make all the decisions, and tell the Treasurer what to rubber stamp. The only real work the last few Treasurers have done is using the position to propel themselves into higher office. The elected position ought to be abolished.

You must have something complicated. I'm claiming about $50 in unclaimed property and they only want my DL, documentation that I lived at a previous address and the signed claim form.

You guys are such fricking drama queens sometimes.

I don't think so.

Am I wrong? If I was an illegal wanting free shite, would JBE and his ilk not fight for my "rights" to all this free shite, even if I couldn't prove who I was?
Are they not the party of "IDs are racist"?

I don't know. It's kind of not the same situation.

This isn't a bad thing imho.

Well every elected official is trying to do that. I actually think the treasurer is the ONLY statewide elected official we need (besides the governor, of course). The Lt. Gov, Insurance Comm, agricultural Commissh for pete's sake! I am ambivelent on Att General. But someone needs to serve as a check on the governor and the treasurer can do that. In accounting lingo, it's a separation of duties thing.
And yes, 80% of what Kennedy used to bang on about was nonsense. But 20% was correct. And it is good to have someone that will alert the public and the media even if some of it is a false alarm.
And even here, as I have said, Schroeder is legally wrong...but he is raising a larger point. One that needs to be made. So to me, this is working as it should.
