Just curious, do you know what the church expenses are? How much they give away?

No, nor do we know how much they take in. I think Jesus called em moneychangers.

Proof? Or are you just upset that he does well as a pastor?

I don't see the problem with Joel Osteen. I've been to his church a few times with a friend before they moved into the Compaq Center.

It's not like he's forcing you to attend his church.

Like I said, BHP, you might want to educate yourself before you lambast my statement. These people are nothing but money-grubbing phonies who have used religion in order to become super rich.

There are some honest televangelists, but there are many who aren't. Joel Osteen is one of the phonies.

Nothing personal, but how would you have any idea? You're a self-professed atheist. You don't follow any of these people.

But, thanks for the ignorant and misguided insult.

Would be comfortable saying the congregation does! They know what goes out. So again, what is your problem with them? Is it that they are a large church? That a pastor is not living out of his car? What?

What if all that money went to help the needy? You don't know where it went and besides, people freely gave to the church. Why don't you worry about the money that is forcefully taken from you by the government and wastefully spent like to make a website for Obamacare at the tune of over $500 million and has been a disaster.

Atheist or not. And you know this how? Because he's on TV?

No.

You made NO specific allegation in the post I criticized.

You asked 'why would a LAWYER leave his job to do this one?'

That is all...that is dumb.

You cannot come back with additional opinions and act as if my criticism has been refuted. I refuted a SPECIFIC statement.

fricking ridiculous that a church brings in 600k in hard donations in a single day..

43,500 members. That's $13.79 per member. Give or take some of course for those who don't give and those who give more. Really not all that outrageous given their size.

Do you think I limit my KNOWLEDGE to that with which I believe or experience?

I am fairly versed in Greek mythology....Don't fear Zeus.

I know a bit about String Theory...but, have not accepted it ....yet.

I can talk fairly intelligently on the female menstrual cycle....never worn a tampon.

C'mon. You painted with a broad brush and i pointed out you colored outside the lines. No need to get upset

Since Osteen is worth $40 million, I'm guessing that he's keeping part of it. :)

Maybe from his books?

Now it's wrong to have money and be a pastor!

No matter what, it's fricking ridiculous.

Id imagine the online and drop box donations equal another 1-200k. So let's say they bring in 750k every Sunday.

That is 39m a year

I'd love to know what % of that is given to needy people and then also what % goes to olsteen and his staff.

You aren't understanding what I'm saying, bhp. I'm not saying that, technically, they are doing anything illegal. I'm saying that they have used religion in order to become super rich.

Here's how a ministry is supposed to work. They are supposed to appoint an independent board of directors. That board is supposed to set a reasonable salary for the pastor and other top employees. Remember, a ministry is different from a regular business. They derive income from donations and the sale of things like books, tapes, etc. They are certainly entitled to make a good salary, but they aren't supposed to become super rich from running a ministry.

The Dallas Morning News ran a story on the Osteen family over a decade ago. According to tax records in Houston, every member of the family lived in a multi-million dollar home. For a ministry, that isnt supposed to be the case.

I'm a Christian, not a Christian basher. But I despise the one's who are money grubbing phonies. Osteen and the entire family have used religion to become super rich.

Not to mention the watered down version of Christianity he preaches, but I'm not interested in discussing that.

People have to want to hear you to be their minister. Don't see a congregation offering you any call. Even the 20 member ones.

I'd be pretty worried if you saw anybody asking me to be a minister.
