A few years after he was the VP nominee, I met him at the old MSY. It was kinda surreal as he was just completely by himself. No SS detail or assistant. Spoke to him for a couple of minutes.. He was really nice. Soft spoken and very cordial.

Liberals thought about Joe L the way Conservatives think about McCain.
Earlier in their careers, a moderate statesman got a ton of respect from all sides. Toward the end of their careers, that type of person had no base at all. All sides hated them.

While correct, almost everyone at the time - Republicans and democrats had the same fervor toward Iraq. Obviously in hindsight we know all of them were full of shite but I do think for a dem he was a decent enough guy. Really sad what has become of the democrat party.
