Jeremy Alford: Jockeying Underway for LA Governor’s Race

At this point during the last open gubernatorial cycle, in the summer of 2013, then-Rep. John Bel Edwards was preparing to take his long shot bid for governor from zero to 60 in the following months. He already had parts of his team in place and was planning to hold strategy meetings in July and begin polling in earnest shortly thereafter.
Good planning, of course, led to positive results as Edwards became the only Democratic governor in the Deep South two years later. He ran a multi-year campaign and created a template that both Republicans and Democrats can follow in the next open cycle in 2023.
quote:
Some in the potential 2023 field are already making some unmissable moves. Last week, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser appealed to lawmakers and asked for additional money for early childhood education. It’s a strong issue for Nungesser, and one legislative appropriators have been accused of overlooking this session. The approach is noteworthy — Nungesser is becoming more confrontational than usual in staking out policy stances and there’s probably more to come.
Two other potential GOP candidates also locked horns earlier this month in a minor way via Twitter. Attorney General Jeff Landry, from his official office account, tagged Treasurer John Schroder in a post containing some professional advice. Landry wanted Schroder to join the efforts of treasurers in 15 other states where financial institutions are being warned they could lose state business if they bend to federal pressure to “de-carbonize.”
The Twitter nudge could have been overlooked as friendly advice had Schroder not met with family and friends just days prior to kick off the exploratory phase of his potential run for governor.
There will be plenty of Republicans to choose from in the race if it continues to shape up this way. The newest name in the mix belongs to Sen. Rick Ward, who is being encouraged to take a serious look at the race after the regular session is adjourned on June 10.
On the Democratic side, meanwhile, there are only questions marks. As reported in LaPolitics Weekly earlier this year, Sen. Gary Smith is thinking about a bid. Other Democratic names, however, will eventually surface.
There’s also a long list of Republicans who have been approached by supporters about running, but aren’t publicly making moves at this time, including but not limited to Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Chair Bret Allain, Congressman Garret Graves and Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain.

And People wonder why Louisiana is ranked last in almost every quality category in the country ...

Who would be ideal if none of the names mentioned are desirable?
Steve Scalise ain’t leaving Washington, D.C., and while many have felt John Kennedy could make a good Governor based on his statements and some actions as Treasurer, he’s probably now too comfortable as being 1 of 100 US Senators to try his had at the 4th Floor, at least this point and time.
ETA: Had to correct my brain fart that a poster below pointed out.

I'd vote for Graves right now over the rest of that slimy lot

Mike Johnson ain’t leaving DC either. He is waiting for a Senate seat to open up.

There are 100 senators.
Nobody in Washington is running for Governor except maybe the uneducated Graves. Just a reminder he couldn’t graduate from any of the three colleges he attended. I wonder why?
You can’t name one thing Mike Strain has done except slow roll the medical marijuana and prevent recreational marijuana.
Nungesser is notoriously corrupt and even got played by some fake Iraqis years ago.

Isn't it something? The state GOP (filled w GOPe-s and RINOS) is an embarrassment. Don't know Gary Smith but I would be as excited to vote for the others as I would George W again.

Garret isn’t running for governor. I believe he has his eyes on Cassidy’s senate seat. My guess is that Cassidy won’t run for re-election 6 years from now and Graves will walk into that seat with minimal resistance.
Kennedy isn’t running either. Being a Senator is a way better gig than being governor. Governor of Louisiana has a ton of power, but also a ton of headaches and negative attention. Senators get tons of perks and graft opportunities with a fraction of the responsibilities and accountability. A senate seat in the hand is worth way more to him than a tough campaign for governor.
Scalise isn’t running because if the GOP takes the house in 2022, he’s in line to be Speaker, the second most powerful position in the country (Governor of Louisiana is no better than 4th).
Clay Higgins isn’t running because Landry is his boi. They are both baws with a lot of respect and mutual support for oneanother.
I’d watch out for someone coming out of North Louisiana like Johnson or Letlow. Julia got a ton of press when her husband died of Covid, giving her a ton of name-recognition state wide. I wouldn’t be shocked if she tried to cash in that cache for a shot at the governor’s mansion knowing she doesn’t have to leave her congressional seat to do so. Johnson is basically unknown outside of Shreveport/Bossier, so I doubt that he would be ready to make that jump at this time.
Landry vs Nunguesser is going to be the big fight with another GOP candidate just in the mix to rake mud at Landry (Probably Ward). Landry will be the “conservative” while Nunguesser is without a doubt a RINO, as is Rick Ward who didn’t switch parties from dem to rep until 2013.
We could do a lot better than Landry, who is kinda a dummy that keeps falling up, but we could do so much worse. Nunguesser would be just about the worst possible Republican that could get elected. There are many Democrats I would support over him, and I am about as conservative as it gets.
I’m not sure if Mike Strain would be good or not. The main thing I know about him is how he has used every tool in his arsenal to handcuff the legal medical marijuana system to keep it from taking off, basically ignoring the legislature.

A TD candidate (or slate of candidates for several statewide offices), would be pretty damn funny.
I call dibs on Lt Governor!
ETA: members of the poliboard could create a superPAC and endorse candidates. There’s no law against that.

If the welder that ran against Cassidy runs for Governor, he has my vote.
That list of candidates are RINOs just jockeying for the opportunity to shite all over the citizenry.

That'll be terrible, Louisiana loses again

His reaction to Jan 6 aside, he’s been a great congressman, especially when it comes to infrastructure, fema, duplication of benefits, and the army corps of engineers. We could do WAY worse.
