Reagan had to deal with an democrat House and Senate.

Reagan had a LOT of flaws. Immigration was one of the biggest.
I thought labeling amnesty as his fatal flaw in my initial post laid the groundwork that there were non fatal flaws as well.

Gun control came about with Reagan over the fear of armed minorities in urban areas. He also punted on the issue of immigration. We all love The Gipper but he did those who came after him a terrible disservice.
Don't forget about taxing SS.

Reagan fricked a lot of shite up in 1986. Immigration bill is #1and Hughes amendment is a close #2.

Exactly. Congressmen will always protect the House until they become a Senator, VP, or President.

GHWB is why it is today. He was the ultimate RINO.

I am not sure I buy Vance's argument.
I am not defending Reagan's amnesty, I am just not sure it was really the cause of California turning blue.
Texas and California have had similar Hispanic populations at least since the 80s up to the present day. Yet Texas turned red at roughly the same time California went blue - the early to mid 90s.
Why the difference?

They allowed the Hughes amendment attached to the Firearms protection act in 1986. A little history on this issue. The FPA 1986 allowed the USPS to accept shipment of ammo, long gun sales to neighboring states and protection of people traveling state to state with legal firearms. All good.
The bad. The Hughes amendment was attached late in the night of passing the bill. It made the transfer of machine guns illegal between individuals after the President signed it. The POS NRA went along with it. There wasn’t an issue with registered MG being used in crimes. As a matter of fact the instance of it is so low that ATF doesn’t even track it.

The biggest cause of CA turning blue was the rise of sanctuary cities--because the federal government never came through by later Congresses on promised funding for detained people local law enforcement encountered. That's still a problem today as Congress still doesn't fund it, and CBP doesn't pick people up, so the they are just turned loose.
quote:TX didn't have the budget crisis from "free" giveaway programs that CA did. So locals were better funded. That's changing rapidly. Most of the large metro areas in TX will immediately release any suspected illegal as soon as they get to the jail. It's a pretty sweet deal.

OK, I like Vance but he is wrong about Reagan "destroying mental health." (He is right about Reagan's amnesty, though).

That was his biggest flaw. He chickened out and picked Bush rather than another conservative to back him up.
He beat Carter with about 45 states - he didn't need to compromise with anybody.

A one time amnesty created by a bi paristan committee did not make California blue. 10's of Millions of immigrants since then did.

Reagan took the bait and was lied to and duped. The Dems never delivered their half of the bargain. Tip O'Neill lied to him.

Having the black Panthers parading in the streets with long guns was not a good look.

He led on raising the drinking age to 21. That never set well with me.

Didn’t Reagan grant amnesty with some immigration reform handshake deal that the dems reneged on? This is true. I forget the details.
Same thing happened with raising taxes-the Dems promised to cut spending if Reagan raised taxes with a hand shake agreement and of course the cutting spending never actually happened.
