no he is not a mainstream country music artist, but he is very popular musican that sells out 10 days straight at the Ryman in nashville every year for the past 5 years. He is a prime example of why radio music is like network news for new music. It's all fake!

What can you see from your window?
I can't see anything from mine.
Flags on the side of the highway
And scripture on grocery store signs.
Maybe eighteen was too early.
Maybe thirty or forty is too.
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
Before he sent down his angels for you?
Mamas and grandmamas love you
'Cause that's all they know how to do.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleeping in your dress blues.
Your wife said this all would be funny
When you came back home in a week.
You'd turn twenty-two and we'd celebrate you
In a bar or a tent by the creek.
Your baby would just about be here.
Your very last tour would be up
But you won't be back. They're all dressing in black
Drinking sweet tea in styrofoam cups.
Mamas and grandmamas love you.
American boys hate to lose.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleeping in your dress blues.
Now the high school gymnasium's ready,
Full of flowers and old legionnaires.
Nobody showed up to protest,
Just sniffle and stare.
But there's red, white, and blue in the rafters
And there's silent old men from the corps.
What did they say when they shipped you away
To fight somebody's Hollywood war?
Nobody here could forget you.
You showed us what we had to lose.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleeping in your dress blues.
No, no you never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleeping in your dress blues.

Good for him for doing the right thing. He will be thoroughly criticized by the unwashed and unread masses, but he has the courage to do what’s right anyway.

Jason Isbell doing the right thing You don't have a clue man. I've met a lot of famous people over the last 10 years. Jason Isbell is the biggest piece of shite and self righteous dick head out of them all and it ain't even close. That man needs a thorough arse whipping. And it sucks because he does have good music and is one of the most underrated guitar players out there.

In my opinion he was the heart of DBT. They haven't been near the band they were when he was with them. He does have some good stuff like the below

Youtube

That said his political crap makes it hard to listen to him anymore. I think his best stuff is behind him. I think Southeastern, and Something More Than Free were probably his best.

I make a conscious effort to always separate the art from the artist but this guy and Sturgill Simpson really make it hard.

I'm not a fan of his politics but you cant deny his musical ability.

Tiny desk

The first song is about Ryan Adams breakup with Mandy Moore.

There's something about creative minds that naturally makes them somewhat collectivist. Too much emotion and not enough logic.

Patterson Hood was the heart of DBT for better or worse (personally always preferred Cooley’s songs) and his politics are just a a bad as Isbell’s. Isbell had some incredible songs obviously but it was 2-3 per album. Also Brighter than Creations Dark might be my favorite DBT record and it’s the first one post-Isbell. Everything after that sucked hard though

This board reflexively downvoting dress blues, a moving song about Isbell’s high school classmate who joined the marine corps and died in Iraq, because Isbell is a liberal might be peak Tigerdroppings

I thinknif I put down my top 10 DBT songs half would be Isbell.

And then Southeastern in my mind is one of the best Americana Albums in decades.

I think I’d put down 5 of his too honestly. Outfit, Decoration Day, TVA, Danko/Emanuel, and Goddamn Lonely Love. I just like the other two guys too and they put out so much more quantity that it’s hard to call him the heart. He wasn’t even on Southern Rock Opera or Brighter than Creations Dark. And I just really like Cooley’s voice the best and his style the most. Isbell and Hood could learn a lot from Cooley’s lyric: “talking tough’s easy when it’s other people’s evil when you’re judging what they do and don’t believe. Seems to me you’d have to have a hole in your own to point a finger at somebody else’s sheet”

He sucks, his music sucks and he can't sing. If that makes me have poor taste, so be it. Most of the country agrees, since you don't hear his music anywhere but paid radio

Once again you’re free to not like or like whomever you want but the radio is atrocious. Everyone agrees about that, so it’s a weird metric to keep bringing up

DBT is a good band for sure. I like The other two guys too.

My favorite Isbell/DBT song is The Day John Henry Died.

Carl Perkin’s Cadillac and Daddy’s Cup are up there for me too and I think They’re both Cooley.

That’s like saying Drake is the best rapper and Nickelback is the best band since they are all over fm
