Yes 80s country would be more traditional than today's country. The same could be said the decades prior such as the 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s and 30s. All could find roots in blues music.

You can not like his music, but popularity isn’t an indication of anything other than that he doesn’t make club music
I have asked 30ppl and no one has any idea who this is
Must be a big favorite amongst betas and millennials

Despite supposedly loving Southern Culture, these neo-Nashville hipsters actually have the same opinion of run-of-the-mill, middle-aged white men as Hillary Clinton — a basket of unredeemable deplorables.

Yeah but that bad isbell assault rifle tweet led directly to the guy with feral hog problem tweet so it was net win for humanity

I didnt say he can't write but his actual singing is mediocre.

Wallen turned it into a hit but ok

Even he would agree that he’s not a good singer, but then neither was Kristofferson or Prine. All their voices serve their songs well enough

I wonder if this bird is aware of southern bands like “Deerhunter” but I really only would want to hear Cajun’s opinion of them honestly

Fair enough. Willie Nelson is another one who can't really sing when you think about it haha

Isbell has never gotten mainstream airplay for his version would have been a hit. Same thing with Sturgil Simpson, he is the best thing to happen to Nashville ever and can't get on the radio.

I absolutely love Willie’s voice in the 1970s and early 80s but yeah, at the very least it is unique and unpolished

I love that Sturgill’s “breakthrough hit” was about doing dmt

Charlie Daniels couldn’t sing. George Jones could sing but not in a way that would get radio play today. Hank Williams had a cool voice but again not a radio friendly one. The more I think about it the more I get mad that Nashville tries to make everyone sound the same. Give me Loretta Lynn over Carrie Underwood any day

i turned alot of country baws i hunt with to Jason Isbel, sturgil simpson, cody jenks, billy stirngs...they always tell me at the camp to play something they don't know they like yet.

Yeah I just like Wallen's more I feel like he's got better range on it or whatever the musical term is for that. Wallen does have some goofy frat bro country but hes got some solid songs too. Yeah I like Sturgill a lot as well. I find better music on YouTube Playlist and pandora than on the radio!
