New Orleans
Chicago
Atlanta
Los Angeles

Just eyeballing it, seems like about 15M-20M people if you're counting the metro areas. Some of these are among the most popular places to live in the country.

Seems to be a lot more lamenting than "cheering" here.

"metro areas" =/= "cities"

I live in DFW, would not live in Dallas.

Just eyeballing it, you are a dumbass.

Other than Detroit and maybe St. Louis, these are some of the most expensive places to live. The high cost of living can’t be all attributed to high taxes or other policies. People are moving there and driving up the price. Those people have to be moderately successful at their businesses or jobs to afford to live in these places. Also, these cities have some of the highest test scores for public high schools. If these cities are so horrible to live in why are so many people moving there and paying so much to live there?

High paying jobs.

I lived in NYC and I don’t regret it, but I didn’t love it and I wouldn’t do it twice. There are certainly people who like the city, but for many it’s certainly a work driven compromise.

I've only been once to NYC. Spent a week. Stayed in Brooklyn and went all over where the train would take us. Many memories, but I would never live there...unless it was a 7 figure salary, then I might consider it. I like space too much, and many situations were inducing claustrophobia.

I lived in a big city (population 5 million) for awhile. It was fun and exciting at first, especially since I was only 20-21 years old, but it didn’t take long for it to become a drag. Traffic, expensive, crackheads. Once the shiny newness of it wears off, you quickly notice how crappy a big city can be. I was ready to get out of dodge when the opportunity to came up.

Why anyone would willingly choose to live in a city center as opposed to a suburb or exurb is beyond me.

Not everyone wants to spend 2 hours plus in their car commuting every day to work. If you don’t have kids or can afford private schools, the city offers great access to dining, nightlife, and entertainment.

The sad part is, these cities really are just one decent mayor away from turning things around.

The fact that, for example, New Orleans still attracts so many tourists a year given its shithole ways is maddening when you think of what it could be with proper, even halfway competent leadership and vision.

But unfortunately when the majority of your voting population thinks skin color is the only major qualifier and not aptitude or character...shitholes will only get worse.

New Orleans had their chance after Katrina. I can’t remember their names now but there were a couple of businessmen running for Mayor that could have reset that city. But noooo....they had to re-elect Ray “Chocolate City” Nagin.
