Colleges should teach courses on every topic under the Sun. They are supposed to be places of learning and where people go to have their thinking challenged. We shouldn't censor what they can, and cannot, teach.

Accounting firms aren't going to invest in educating anybody. You come out of school and it's baptism by fire with some advance courses sprinkled in. They don't want to teach anybody basics. They've got those bloated partner pensions to pay for, afterall.

Briefly goes on to explain that many grew up in a religious household and eventually reject the faith.

I assume you meant "reject", and on that, I agree.

It summarizes my situation.

It only seems like an apologist course because it teaches about Islam and not Wahhabism, which is what you see all day on the news.

My Gender Studies in Film class was one of my favorite classes of undergrad, granted it was taught by a straight, white, male from BFE Texas and not some blue haired hippy.

I don't have a problem with any of these classes being taught as electives, but they shouldn't be the only classes professors teach and they sure as hell shouldn't be majors. If someone is dumb enough to take a useless elective instead of something that will help them then let them suffer the consequences, but universities should do all they can to provide a wide, diverse curriculum.

I actually took a course simply titled "Islam" as part of a Master's program in 2000... The course actually served me quite well but it was not one of those "feel good" / "misunderstood religion" type of courses and centered more around the origins, different factions/sects, political ideologies spawned, as well as a basic understanding of the religion itself...

Honestly it was some pretty interesting stuff and like I said, it served me well...

I understand this ideal but what it usually results in challenged/critical thinking equals taking the Leftist position on a given topic.

Then we should work to change that instead of blindly advocating that we censor classes that we disagree with politically. Banning thought you disagree with is what SJWs do.

Are you saying we shouldn't teach these courses because enrollment is too low, and therefore there is no demand, or are you suggesting we use the government to come down and dictate what should and shouldn't be taught at universities?

I would recommend we adhere to supply and demand principles and not government dictates.

I agree with the caveat that student loans should be subjected to the same supply and demand principles

So you think a 101 intro course on all religions covers the same material as a course that focuses on one theology? Did you make it past your freshman year?

You're right it doesnt. That's why draftsmen don't need a degree to scribble on AutoCAD.

I'm guessing you don't know what engineers do.

Until about 1970 Centenary College had a required course titled 'Critical Issues.' It centered around the 15-20 most pressing issues of the day. They brought in guest lecturers to present the background of the controversy and the basic positions advanced by the different factions embroiled in the issue.
There was a reading list of 5 important non fiction books dealing with contemporary struggles.

I think it's a great idea for a class. Has anyone here encountered a course that's similar?

It goes even past that... Once the math is done, you use the advanced math to work problems.
