They were, man. They had cities down there whose populations numbered in the millions. The Spanish came through and slaughtered them looking to loot their gold that was abundant everywhere you looked.

I don't think most would dispute that point. But the current law, which both sides run from addressing has helped to create the problem and the confusion.

Neither side wants to address it. Both WANT the issue...and they are quite content to keep it where it is. Creates discord and issue, therefore votes.

First = we didn't 'immigrate here" - There were no governmental rules we had to honor - there was no culture to swear allegiance to" - there was no obligation for anyone (outside their own moral code) to take care of us if we were unable to take care of ourselves.

We were either 'colonists' who had obligations to whomever paid our fare to get here
- or -
we were 'settlers' taking ownership of any land that didn't 'belong' to someone else.

In either case, those early settlers had to take care of themselves or rely on the good nature of our neighbors and friends and relatives to help them out.

The PROBLEM that has infected our entire culture is the advent of the 'welfare state' - whereby prosperous people are taxed to take care of the "unfortunate."

FDR initiated that during the Great Depression - and in too many cases it was badly needed, however even then no one who 'got on welfare ' was encouraged to 'stay on it.'

We have an ever-growing glut of people who are born into a subculture that has convinced itself that the people who actually do all the work actually OWE them a 'living' - and they EXPECT that standard to keep them "up with the Jones's."

And the DEMOCRAT party tries to expand that part of society because they have NO incentive to encourage productivity - their only desire is more federal spending.

IF we do not reset our culture to one that demands SELF SUFFICIENCY - we are doomed as a great nation.

IF the Democrats get their way we will become a socialistic welfare nation - or even Somali-lite

You: if you put 1,000,000 people in a city then it’s civilized.

Me: We have different definitions of “civilized.”

Because the European descended people rarely leave Latin America. They run things. There's a reason every Mexican president has been white.

Just look at sites like Teotihuacan or Chichen Itza. If you look at those places and see what they built and think they weren't civilized you're fricking retarded.

You see now this is an intelligent response which furthers discussion along the thesis that the article actually presents.

With the exception of a very small limited amount of charity cases in extreme oppression scenenarios where helping out to some extent furthers our foreign policy, immigration should be limited to cases where there is a net benefit to our country, not a drain on it.

Like the new $1M Gold Card immigrants who pay their way up front. Or scientists, doctors, engineers etc…

I’ve visited Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, and a couple of smaller sites in Guatemala.

We don’t need people who can build buildings. We need people who have moral/societal views that are compatible with the West.

Do we need to further discuss what we mean when we say civilized?

All I've heard is people say they weren't civilized until after Spain slaughtered them by the millions, stole their gold, and gave them Spanish to speak. And it's fricking retarded.

What is the difference in an immigrant and settler?

Has no direct relationship to immigration policy or OP's argument

Do you think Guatemala is a model civilization now?

If your sole argument is against the comment that Spain civilized the indigenous people, then that’s a parallel discussion to the one of this thread.

Right. It is. It just irks me to hear people say shite like that. Those indigenous people were fricking slaughtered, not civilized by Spain. It's hard to even imagine the knowledge that was lost during that conquest. Did you know that at Teotihuacan they brought in Mica to use in the building of their pyramids? The nearest source for it is over 3,000 miles away in Brazil. And they also placed huge pools of liquid mercury under the Pyramid of the Sun. Do you know what it requires to produce liquid mercury? Answer, it takes a lot more capability than they are given credit for.

This thesis

quote:

It was actually an easy argument to make, so long as there was not a deep dive into the historical evidence. The Germans, Irish, and Italians had all, more or less, assimilated quickly into American culture. It seemed there really was something in the water, and anyone who could take a sip might become as American as anyone whose family helped found the country.

There is something in the water, to be sure, but it is not a secret sauce — it does not work like that. It only exists because generations of Christian Americans from Anglo-European descent built it, maintained it, and created a highly successful, high-trust society meant to be handed down to their kinfolk..

Has nothing to do with welfare

Non-immigrant Americans dominate welfare. And I mean white people and black persons who descend from slaves, not a "gotcha" talking about recent progeny of immigrants who are now citizens.
