Israel hasn't had a leftwing government since 1998...how?

Considering the nation is a democracy, that is fairly interesting, imo.
In America, we are used to the White house/congress changing parties every few cycles.
It generally ebbs and flows with scandal, economic condition, unpopular legislation, etc.
For 21 years, the right has held onto power in Israel, and just won another election despite netanyahu being under indictment.
My question is this: why don't left wing parties in Israel "adjust" to the median ideology of the average voter in the country? In America, there is ample evidence that political parties adjust their platform based on the general ideological median the nation is currently experiencing.
For example, the 1990s democratic party shifted considerably to the center and even right on many issues because at that time, we were experiencing a conservative revival. The 1940s and 50s GOP shifted leftward compared to 1920s.
Why is the Israeli left wing struggling to at least win one election every so often? It is unacceptable to lose 21 years worth of elections.

Jews from Soviet Union are not particularly fond of the left.

Because Israeli Jews realized the path their left had them on was going to end up with them being:
1. Encouraged to emigrate, or
2. Rounded up into camps
They have sort of a collective understanding of how bad both those options are.

The better question is why are American Jews such big pussies compared to their Israeli counterparts?

Israel is an ethnostate with the very serious problem of having a bunch of Arabs in and around their state. Despite what everyone else is asked to believe about their own nations, Israelis are generally not shy about the fact that their state is by and for the Jewish people, and they aren't going to give over political power to gentiles of any background. I believe the top 5 candidates in their most recent election, from the left and right, all positively affirmed that they are a Jewish state exclusively.
I suspect that a deep dive into the Israeli left right spectrum would reveal that it's considerably different (in policy terms) than the L R spectrum in the US or Europe. This of course, won't hold up if your version of the L R spectrum is something like Statism---------libertarianism or socialism-----free markets.
A popular theory is that the people of a given diaspora are more conservative in their ethnic homelands than they are in their host countries. I think that would prove true for Jewish people in America too.

Simple answer
Their existence depends on it
Their existence depends on it
Posted on 4/19/19 at 10:23 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
War is at their gate every day.
Everyone knows their role.
"Hard times create strong men, Strong men create good times, Good times create weak men, Weak men create hard times."

There is a long and complicated answer here, but the short of it is that American Jews usually came to the US much earlier, and adopted American civic nationalism as their ideology, with an emphasis on pluralism, which made their natural allies other minorities. They've been Democrats since the New Deal Coalition, breaching the progressive wings of the party with the wings of the party catering to American ethnic minorities.
Israeli Jews had much of their views formed in a different environment, and were more taken with ethnonationalism, which was en vogue in Europe, and was one of the reasons they wanted an Israeli state to begin with.
American Jews are less likely to be Zionists, while for the Israeli Jews, Antizionism is Antisemitism, because their national and ethnic identity are intertwined, while for American Jews, it is not.

Oh, ok. I guess every single candidate in the election a few weeks ago is mistaken.

Jews in Europe and the US use left wing politics as a weapon to destabilize, undermine, and ultimately topple white, Western (aka Christian) countries.
It's really no surprise at all they run a different playbook in Israel, the lone country they are the majority.

Absolutely
The left leaning Jews either stayed in Europe or moved to the United States. It was largely nationalist hardliners who emigrated to Israel.
Jewish critics, and there were many, noted that Zionism had more to do with nationalism than it did with the Torah. The project was immoral, in their eyes.

And all of their solutions just make things worse.

There are three solutions to the Palestinian problem, separation, coexistence in a single state, and a military option.
Labor embraced separation. There would be two states. And they came to the cusp of actually doing that, but in that moment, they realized they weren’t willing to make that sacrifice. The price was too high.
Coexistence, in a single state, is a demographic disaster. The Palestinians would outnumber the Jews in a generation, and that’s a non starter for Israelis.
Which leaves us with the military option, which is what the public has settled on. And this is where you do see some diversity, as each right wing party has its own take on what a military solution looks like.

If the left wants to compete, they’ll have to adopt Likuds position on the Palestinians. And that would be very difficult for them to stomach.

Their populace is tiny. They have mandatory service. They have more nuclear families.
There are no masses of victims or sheople to corral into voting their way.
