Sure. He's an white male (although, he looks a hell of a lot older than his 60 years) to blunt Kamala's complicasian issues, but he's arguably farther left than she is. Considering the shitshow of the last 4 years, is this a "base saving" pick in the hopes to avoid a demolition in November and save down ballot races while ceding the White House?

He had no real prospects of further success, so he could take this job and not care if it made him unelectable down the road.

Kamala is not a strong candidate. I think it's been obvious that their key to victory in this election starts with a wall to wall media narrative followed by a corrupt election. This helped them elect a daffy old white man the last time around, despite record republican turnout. It gave them a previously solid red state in Georgia.
They've openly weaponized the court system against him and don't care who sees it. There's far more smoke around the attempted assassination of Trump than you would expect and they don't seem concerned about the conclusions people are drawing. They've ruined the lives of countless people who have protested or publicly fought back. They are going to steal another election and the VP pick is just a white party hack that presents zero threat and won't ask questions. This is past political science classes.
