I have zero clue how normal naval operations work. Would a flagship ship like that carry nuclear weapons in a situation as tense as this?

Are subs the only US ships that go out armed with nukes?

Why would that be doubtful? I guess the entirety of your nuclear readiness at sea could be sub based. I mean that's possible but I wouldn't "doubt" their missile boats weren't also carrying some kind of nuclear payload either.

There are far too many Putin sympathizers on this board.

Ok I am actually now more curious about the downvotes. Do people think asking this is anti Russia? Dumb to ask?

I legit find “broken arrow” scenarios fascinating and don’t see why losing their main ship shouldn’t beg the question.

I missed the thread that got all these pussies sobbing.

There is nothing about my question that says “Russia bad for having nukes on a war vessel!!!!” I am not even saying answering a war question says your on one side or the other in things.

Quit your gaping for frick sake.

If this is true maybe someone doesn’t approve of the invasion.

The Slava class were designed to be carrier killers. They have nuclear capable cruise missiles, but the Slava class were not part of the Soviets nuclear triad.

Looking for more from dumbasses that don’t want to answer a neutral war question.

Since you decided to actually answer my question, is that because nuclear cruise missles etc aren’t ever carried by missle cruisers? I legit was asking that question.

Thank you!

So the cruise missles are long range bomber launched? Subs launch them?

I have heard from a decent source that standard procedure is for the Moskva to deploy armed with two 350 KT nuclear tipped vulkan missiles.

Also isn’t the triad of both USA and Russia based on deterrence? Wouldn’t offensive use be a bit more open?

Once again I am curious.

Cruise missiles can be launched by air, sea, subsurface and land. Back in the 70s and 80s cruise missiles could carry a conventional or NBC warhead. After the USSR dissolved nukes were typically removed from surface vessels. The vessels typically carrying them were SSBNs.

Course this war may change all that.

Why would you carry a Nuke on a ship in The Black Sea? That makes zero sense especially since Russia shares a border with Ukraine. It is not like Russia would not be able to touch any Ukrainian target if from land if they wanted too. Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? No.

Yes... strategic deterrence.

SSBNs (missile subs) can carry up to 24 Trident II D5 missiles with each missile capable of carrying multiple warheads. The SSBNs mission is strategic deterrence... they're always out there ready for when SHTF.

Tomahawk missiles are also capable of carrying nuclear warheads. There are many surface ships and fast attack subs (2nd flight 688s and newer classes) that can carry Tomahawks.
