If you look at history this way, horrible things are often for the benefit of future generations in the long run.

The Black Death brought on the end of feudalism by making the work of peasants worth more.

The mongol conquest opened the East to Europe.

Every immigrant group came to America because of terrible conditions in their homeland.

Sub-Saharan Africans aren’t special in that the toil of their forebears brought their progeny a better life

This is really all I’m trying to say. We have benefited greatly from atrocities that have happened to our ancestors. Here is what a writer once said when she saw Hitler riding under the Arc De Triomphe:

quote:

If Germany, thanks to Hitler and his successors, were to enslave the European nations and destroy most of the treasures of their past, future historians would certainly pronounce that she had civilized Europe.

You need to try to look at it from their perspective if you can, and not solely from how we hundreds of years later have benefited from it from our biased point of view.

The modern world could be better if it hadn’t happened.

Does that mean that modern world would be better if all blacks still lived in Africa??

Slavery itself cannot be supported, Slavery that happened was a disaster for the people enslaved. Slavery did however bring a sizable portion of a backward culture into the civilized world and descendants of slavery benefited greatly for the misery and abuse their ancestors endured.

The horrors of slavery should never be forgotten - neither should the benefits MODERN blacks derive from the misery their ancestors endured.

Human beings have existed in Africa a million years before arriving in Europe/Asia - and Africa remained a completely backward culture while everywhere else on the planet, humans were striving toward modern civilization.

Facts are facts - and history cannot be repealed. It must be dealt with based on current environment.

When someone murders your family you seek to have that person convicted and punished. You do not punish their uninvolved children - or their children - or their children.

Slavery needs to be studied to understand the cultural mores that allowed it to happen - on both sides of the 'slave' issue - whites bought slaves - blacks sold them. Both cultures are required to saddle their share of the blame for such a horrible institution.

That's an excellent point. Also, Europe was overpopulated prior to the great plagues (there were several) and agricultural production was not keeping up.

Exactly what standard are you using for 'not letting slave holder's legacy" 'get away with it."

I have read most of your posts in this thread and I have no idea what it is you are advocating for.

Do you think there are people alive today that thinks slavery was NOT an evil institution??.

Another way of expressing the words of the OP. Excellent post. The backwardness of the African is a main reason they were the targets of the slave trade in general. An uneducated, uncivilized, ill informed populace is the easiest to manipulate and conquer.

Interesting question.

How different would the history of the USA be (including modern times) if black slaves were never brought over?

It is without a doubt the greatest thing that ever happened to the black American.
