WOW. This is like putting up a NO GUN ZONE at a school and thinking that will stop school shootings.

Hell yeah.

Unless you are now selling Hezbollah as Sunni.
Hezbollah just doesn’t care about us. Their ambitions are regional, and are ultimately about their place in Lebanon.
This gets into Islamic theology, and the profound differences between the Sunni and Shiite, but Sunni are on a religious crusade against modernity, and the west, and the Shiite aren’t.

Imperial Japan went to war with the United States, not because they thought they would win, the leadership believed they would lose a long war, but because they felt honor bound to fight.

Then if they were as reasoned and smart as you want to say they are, they would endeavor to act in a way that makes us not care about them. They are doing it wrong.

Their ambitions are to use their backing by Iran to put them in charge of Iraq. Why would they give a shite about Lebanon, if they are running Iraq, and killing Jews?

Iran isn't Imperial Japan. They're a bunch of spineless terrorists.

By stepping away, the balance of power equalizes, making conflict riskier, and thus less likely.

Have you spent any time on the ground in the sandbox? They don’t have that sort of honor. Aces zealots might, but the comparison to Japan is silly for a host of reasons.

Well, we definitely will have to agree to disagree on this one.

Statement from Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei
quote:
Message of Condolences from the Leaders of the Islamic Revolution on the Testimony of Qepam Qasim Soleimani, the Grand Commander of Heavenly Glory, Heavenly Revenge Is a Hard Revenge by the Critics The great and glorious commander of heavenly Islam became. Last night, the ghosts of the martyred Taiba embraced the spirit of Qasim Suleimani. Years of sincere and courageous struggle on the battlefields of demons and the secrets of the universe, and years of the desire to testify in the cause of God, eventually brought Suleimani to this high position, and his pure blood was poured out to the most devout human beings on earth. I congratulate this great martyrdom before the Prophet Baqi'ah on the souls of Faddah and his holy spirit and extend his condolences to the Iranian people. He was a prominent example of the educated people of Islam and the school of Imam Khomeini. He spent all his life in jihad in the cause of God. Witnessing the reward was his unremitting effort all these years, as he went about his divine work and his path would not stop and close, but the vengeance is on the face of the criminals who lay their wicked hand on his blood and other martyrs of the incident. Last night. Martyr Soleimani is the international face of the Resistance, and all those who are devoted to it are bloodthirsty. All friends - Venice, all enemies know that the Jihad of Resistance will continue to be doubly motivated and a definite victory for the Mujahideen. Kurdish. The nation of Iran will commemorate Martyr Alimqam, the commander of Qasem Suleimani and his companions, especially the great Mujahideen of Islam, Mr. Abu Mahdi Al-Mohandes. . KHAMENEI. If we care, it’s really because of the lobbying from Saudi Arabia and Israel. They really shape our perceptions of the region.
In fairness, CENTCOM also wants revenge for the casualties we suffered in Iraq from Iranian supported forces.

Somewhere between 1/4 of a million and half a million Iraqis died fighting against the Iranians in the 80s.
The Iraqis find Iran useful at times, just as they find us useful, but Arabs will never let Persian rule them.
I’d we pull back, Iraq will become more independent, and less likely to follow Iran’s lead.

This is my take as well...hence my prediction of a dramatic rise in terrorist acts if this scenario ever played out.
Low grade conflict of that nature would be less expensive than the status quo. And less destructive.

The War in the 80's was Iraq invading Iran.
For the past decade, Iran has been openly invading Iraq via migration/immigration. The Shia have poured in from the border pretty much unchecked (with the tacit blessing of the prior US administration). In our full absence, my take is that Iraq will descend into yet another civil war.

A stalled economy begs to differ. A wave of everlasting terrorist attacks would be MUCH worse than the status quo imho...and more costly.

I don’t think you’d see much conflict in the region. Honest answer. The occasional score settling, but that’s it.
And the status quo is pretty bad. Look at the fighting in Libya, and in Syria.

And the Navy didn’t have a lot of faith that that would work. But it was their best option.

I don’t think the Sunnis are in a position to fight one. They just don’t have the numbers.
