Disagree about the masks. They really only prevent you from spitting on people. You are getting 5% protection…more or less. The particles go right through because of their size. Hell, half the packages of masks say it right on the package. It’s all pointless anyway if you aren’t covering your eyes. There have been studies on this going back to the early 19th century and they all concluded they offer little protection

He wasn't unreasonable at all.
Kids are not at risk.
This isn't debatable.
All the stats worldwide support this.

The vaccines prevent death to at least a decent degree.
But, they aren't shite at stopping infections. As Israel, etc have shown.

Ultimately, we need to stop being giant pussies, get healthier as a society, and push through via natural infections amongst the younger population.

I do love it when a pair of writers with journalism degrees, and nary a single science course between them, """Fact Check""" medical details. It makes for fun reading.

Like quotes from an "aerosol expert" about the ability of a simple mask to prevent inhalation of virus.
That is really special.

Or the intimation that masking kids to protect them from CV19 makes any sense at all, when we never remotely considered masking them during flu season.
Brilliant!

You have to hand it to Swenson and Fraser though. It takes a lot of moxie to write an entire fact check piece about a subject of which you know nothing at all.

I would bet most viral transmission is through touching. We touch our face unconsciously thousands of times a day. And the way we wear the masks they have become really good viral repositories. Touch your mask a couple of times, put your hand on a door knob and leave a virus for the next unsuspecting victim. Touching is how the virus is spread and the way masks are wore is exasperating the problem.

That's true. But CV19 appears to spread most effectively through aerosol. In fact, some studies indicate CV19 should be recategorized as an airborne virus.

Masks do work in that they limit dispersal of aerosol emissions. Recent surges in CV19 are likely related to relaxed mask and distancing policy. None of which has much to do with kids.

Pediatric CV19 transmissibility by any route appears more limited. Pediatric symptoms and disease course are less than seasonal flu.

In terms of masking, kids are not small adults. Their anatomy and physiology is different. Masking kids noticeably increases dead space ventilation (respiratory volume not involved in pulmonary gas exchange), resulting in hypercapnia (CO2 retention), at least in some cases. It is a problem. Masking is not a harmless exercise for kids.

The whole mask debate is ridiculous. They are a ton of experts out there that have stated the mask people are wearing everyday aren't stopping anything. It's all theatrical. Just like in this article they give vague fact checks instead. Why not give micron particle levels if you really want to tell people what the masks are blocking? These journalist reach out to numerous people asking for responses and they use the one response that fits their narrative.

maybe with the cheap fabric ones but not KN95s. There are physics involved in this that go beyond pore size....inertia and electrostatic precipitation. Doctors wear them for a reason during surgery. Put one on and try to blow out a candle

99.99% has never worn or isn’t wearing N95 masks. It’s decorated cotton from China

But the controversy is over the cloth-type masks. Aren't the N95's supposed to be a better fitting mask than the KN95's? The N95's are OSHA regulated I believe, while the K's are a Chinese thing...unless I'm mistaken I'll pass on the KN95's.

The N95 may be more effective than the Chinese version, but either is fine. Both are better at self-protection than surgical masks. Surgical masks are effective at limiting aerosol emission, and better than cloth masks.

Can you link some studies verifying this?

It is really insane that the media is so communist now they claim common sense life saving techniques to be "misinformation " or "false"

I am not clicking the garbage link, but I assume they say nothing to discredit the parent besides calling him some names

Thanks for confirming for us.

I believe N95s are more "fitted". K95s are just readily available. I have to wear them at work and let me tell you, it sucks. There is a clear difference btw those and cloth.

One of the interesting things is that N95s come statically charged. Its one of the three methods for preventing breakthrough. So a perfectly good N95 loses one of its methods after the charge is grounded. No idea how long that takes but I imagine not very long

I love it more when Internet warriors with no understanding of biology or chemistry spout "facts" about viruses and masks that they read on Facebook, heard from a friend, or just think should be true.

A notebook offers some protection from a bullet, not as much as kevlar but some. If you use the "aerosol experts" thinking.
