Just four short years before, the mere suggestion that Russia was the greatest geopolitical threat to the US was quite literally laughed at and mocked by the sitting US President (a Democrat). So in four years the Russians went from a joke to the cold war era USSR powerhouse? And they did so without the US President and his administration noticing anything whatsoever? If they were a joke in 2012, but a "threat to the core of our democracy in 2016", then what the frick happened? And how did apparently NO ONE in the Obama administration of Russia's reemergence as a world-wide threat?
That narrative COMPLETELY changed when the unexpected happened...Trump won the presidency.
It's nothing more than a projection by the democrats to justify a result none of them dreamed was imaginable. They simply could not and still cannot fathom the idea that a significant chunk of the country does not agree with their policies/message to the degree that they felt it was a better option to elect a arrogant millionaire/celebrity with no political experience at all. It's the ultimate "blame the referee" excuse for you being beaten by the other team
This is probably right.

There are a couple of reasons.
The primary reason is this is just another thing they are throwing against the wall to see how well it sticks.
We've seen thus far over the past 6-8 months that the tax package will kill millions,
then that the tax package has only produced wealth for the wealthiest,
then that the tax package returns for the lower classes was just "crumbs",
then trade wars, then Stormy,
then border children
and during all this we had co-running themes of...
Flynn will be flipping any minute, Trump will go to jail
Cohen will be flipping any minute, Trump will go to jail
Manafort will be flipping any minute, Trump will go to jail
Gates will be flipping any minute, Trump will go to jail
Mueller will be indicting Kushner
Mueller will be indicting Trump
Muh Russian Collusion
None of these have really stuck as a driving narrative like the Left has wanted so this is full-court press against Russia is just another attempt to gin up support against Trump. To paraphrase Bill Maher, they would rather any negative consequences that may come from a Trump failure rather than see the country succeed through his efforts.
The other part (although minor) is their attempt at Russian relations...
...failed. Miserably. To reference what I wrote in the preceding point, to have Trump succeed where they so glaringly failed would be an even worse indictment of their ability to govern on the federal level.

It's very similar to the sudden shift with the Right and Trump voters who now argue that Russia/Putin isn't so bad

honestly I think its an attempt in their arrogant minds to manipulate the deplorables.
Just like the lib stalwarts on this very board, they don't even realize how ignorant they come across, they think they can manipulate us hicksvillions.

Agreed. We'll have to wait and see if they respect Trump.

That is perceptions because of the narrative position of the MSM and Democrats juxtaposed against a president trying to prevent a war with Russia.
When in fact Trump has increased sanctions against Russia, made energy deals with eastern European countries so they can be free from Russian energy, bombed their allies, and annihilated up to 300 Russian mercenaries in Syria. Democrat politicians would never be this aggressive toward Russia.

There new found aggression started in earnest during the month of December of 2016 after Trump won the 2016 election.
All that needed to be said.

Do they want Trump to go in and start fist fighting Putin?
How about he just go the Reagan route?

My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.
