Yet Kerry’s records at Yale were only released after Kerry authorized the Navy to release all his service & academic records, which included his academic rankings while a student at Yale:

…Kerry, a Democrat, previously declined to release the transcript, which was included in his Navy records. He gave the Navy permission to release the documents last month, the Globe reported. Kerry graduated from Yale in 1966, Bush in 1968


I conflated my memory of Kerry’s authorized release with the earlier release of Bush’s academic records. To coin a Bushism, I “disremembered.” I stand corrected.

As long as you were reasonably sane and had okay scores, you stood a good chance of admission.

Acceptance rates started coming down in the late 1980s but it was much, much easier to get into Columbia in the early 1980s.
