The wire creates a perimeter known as an “eruv” and it’s not about turning on lights (still can’t do that), it’s about “carrying.” Carrying anything on the Sabbath is prohibited, including things like carrying your house key in your pocket, carrying a child or pushing a baby stroller. An eruv (in theory) allows Jews to do these things within the perimeter. It very much seems like a poorly concocted idea to get around an inconvenient rule and not all Jews go along with it, though most Orthodox seem to.

Yea, those wires are actually in almost every city. I just learned this. They can’t bring anything outside their home on Saturdays, even their keys and other needed items, so they put up wires to expand the zone. NYC has 18 miles worth of wire
