If your kids don't succeed in life, are you a failure?

There's no one answer here; I know that. But, it makes me think. What is the success rate for a child of a politician? What is the success rate for the child of a movie star? Of a wealthy parent who works 6-months off shore per year? Of a wealthy athlete? Of upper middle class 2-parent households? Of middles class 2-parent households? Of single-parent households?
Which success rates are highest overall? Which are the lowest??
These are the kind of statistics that we could really make some progress from. And, once someone collected it, it would be riddled and destroyed.

I would say yes, personally.

Very high. Even if they fail then a politician will cover it up or get them out of it.

I'm of the same mindset too, but I lack the wisdom at this point to truly draw a conclusion.

You can lead a horse to water but you cant....
I think this applies. I know plenty of people that had great parents yet turned into shite stains

Yes. 99% of the time.
There are of course some exceptions that prove the rule. However, most of the time, shity parents lead to shity kids. The reverse is also true.

No. My parents are awesome. Couldn't ask for better. I am successful and well educated (with successful, well educated kids of my own), while one of my siblings is an abject failure and one is OK, but kind of mediocre.

absolutely but that's what the media is for.

First off, how do you define "success"?
Second, it is no secret that a child from a wealthy family, regardless of race, color, or creed, will "likely" have a better shot at this. Many without having to lift a finger.
However, what many may consider a success may be a failure to others.

I find that my actual children, despite their actual numerous achievements of which I am exceedingly proud, always pale in comparison to the accomplishments of someone else's imaginary children.
In other words-have kids-and then we will talk. Not saying you, just in general.

Parents are contributing factors, for sure, yet the ultimate responsibility lies with the individual.
I’ve known many people who had worthless, shitty parents yet grew up to be good, successful individuals. And I’ve known many people who had good, decent parents yet grew up to be useless pieces of shite.
The responsibility is yours.

To an extent. Some kids just will fall apart no matter what you do. There is no sure fire way to parent. I'd say if you have four kids, and three succeed, then clearly the fourth was an outlier. If three of the four fail...then clearly you suck as a parent.

That really doesn't mean they aren't failures.
As parents, you have a job to accomplish. You don't get points for trying hard, or for doing more than most. The only thing that matters is the outcome.

I knew plenty of rich kids growing up. Actual wealth. Not just, my parents are comfortable. They are all trainwrecks. Not all of them are abject failures, but none of them are grounded.
I know none that grew up to be truly successful; although many of them did inherit.
It's one of the reason that I voted for the Donald. None of his kids has ended up in jail, rehab, or on a sex tape. Instead, they all work for him, and have managed to stay out of trouble. Although there's still time for Tiffany I guess. She's a loose cannon.

My motto is simple: If you do not succeed in life, I don't want you to blame your parents. I don't want you to blame the white man. I want you to blame yourselves. The responsibility is yours! In two weeks we have a practice exam, and the Minimum Basic Skills Test on April 13. That's 110 school days from now. But it's not just about those test scores, important as they are. If you do not have these basic skills, you will find yourselves locked out. Locked out of that American dream that you see advertised on TV, the one that they tell you is so easy to get. You are here for one reason. One reason only: To learn. To work for what you want. The alternative is to waste your time. And to fall into the trap of crime, drugs, and death. Does everyone understand that? Do all of you understand me?

maybe we really need to start punishing the parents of frick ups then, as the NOLA Mayor and Police Chief have proposed recently.

One of my favorite Trump quotes:
“I’ve been a lousy husband, I really have. I’m a great father. If I was as good of a husband as I am a father, I would have never been divorced.”

Not necessarily.
But I personally don’t know a single parent out there who wouldn’t feel like one.
I guess there are just POS parents who wouldn’t feel that way. They’re the ones most likely to have been actual failures.

When I was in post graduate studies, my friends and I were talking about that would we deem most important in later life concerning our success in life. Without a doubt, I stated that looking at the state of affairs of my children would be the greatest influence upon my opinion. I still feel the same at 78 Y/O.
