As long as they get to keep more money. Thats what its all about. They can either stay in Canada and inevitably be overrun with socialist policies or give the US a shot to avoid that. Either way the worst that can happen is they end up a socialist hell with the rest of the US, but we know Canada is already beating us on that front.

The furthest-Right province in Canada would still be a Blue State in the US.

You sure you want that?

They've never been given a chanc to vote for a US politician so that's pretty worthless.

Would it though? Are you suggesting ALbertans are too stupid to know which party supports policies in their interests?

There's still things they could do within their state. Its not like the fed runs everything in each state...as this virus shutdown clearly shows us.

I would encourage both provinces to combine to form their own nation. Maybe they would avoid the mistakes both the US and Canada has made.

Thats pointless. The entirety of Canada is heavily dependent on US markets and infrastructure no matter what they do. US statehood would remove all barriers to that including the heavy taxation policies from the Canadian Parliament.

If I lived in Alberta I would rather be independent than have some politicians in DC deciding things for me.

I would favor becoming the Switzerland of North America.

Why would they want to buy into all our debt?

They have no choice economically as it is. They are so ingrained into the US system that they're already subjected to the whims of US politicians and the US political atmosphere.

This is why it makes no sense to be independent. It would be symbolic at best.

We would probably have to let either DC or Puerto Rico become a state to balance out the Senate.
No, that would just create FOUR new Blue Senate seats, rather than the two from Alberta.

And I have no idea where we would find a new Red state to counter-balance Blue Alberta. Texas still has a right to divide, but I see no reason to calve Texas just to admit a few Blue Canucks.

Theres no reason to believe Alberta is a guaranteed blue state. Given their economic dependence on fossil fuels I dont see any way they vote blue knowing the current blue stances on fossil fuels.

They are not going to want to take on our debt.

Why would they being independent change anything about their economic ties to the US??

The US could invest more into their territory.

IDK why Alberta would want to leave a situation where than opt of and turn around and join the US. The US has shown what it is capable of when a state decides it wants to part ways.

The 2016 Canadian census counted a total of 938,495 people living in Alberta who are born outside of Canada. So 22% are immigrants.
