If There Has Ever Been A Litmus Test For Why Democracies Only Last

2-3 hundred years, the responses to this tariff debacle are it.
The gap between the degree of basic economic understanding and the certainty with which populists blindly support these tariffs and their rollout is staggering.
How did the United States make it this far?

It’s just that politics has become tribal.
If the Dems rolled this out, the board would be in Chernobyl Melt mode.
But since it was Trump and the board is Trump friendly, it’s all “nothing to see here” attitudes.

It's that populism has taken over both parties, which has made it blindly tribal.

So you don't believe in retaliatory tariffs?

Profound insight, great OP to spur discussion.
There's not one sensible person who would disagree it's America First Nationalism/Populism that has put the US on the glide slope of managed decline along with racking up $37 trillion of US debt. If Trump would get the hell out of the way the Globalists could fix the US debt spiral and prevent the economic and financial collapse of our constitutional republic.

The truth is NO ONE, not on this board or any of the "experts" currently chiming in, know what's going to happen. Everything is based on speculation, probable's and maybes. I'm willing to give it longer than 24hrs before I form an opinion.

95% of this board would be roasting a Dem for this as intervening with markets/central planning.

Probably has far more to do with hubris than ignorance
OP being a prime example

You'll have to be more specific.
I don't believe in retaliatory tariffs for what purpose?

When have the Democrats ever favored America first policies over globalism? You can make that stupid comment, but that's like saying, "if the Dems started DOGE the place would melt". It's nonsensical because America first is not a part of the Democrat philosophy.

Imma' say it has to do with neither, but bald stupidity.
You being a prime example of that theory.

To force other countries to eliminate tariffs or other penalties on US goods that we are supposed to have open trade with.

That's part of it, but I think it's also part of our turn in the declining hegemon barrel.

This is really what has you questioning how the U.S. made it this far? Seriously?

Last term, when Biden not only kept the vast majority of, but expanded Trumps 2018 and 2019 tariffs.
Or in 2016, when only Trump and Bernie Sanders were preaching tariffs.

Yes.
It's an amazing display of stupidity among the segment of the population that has historically been relied upon to be the adults in the room.
It's an announcement that there are no more adults in the room.

We didn’t elect Sociopaths as President before Trump.

All this based on a message board and the posts that are made on it concerning tariffs... Drama queen much?

So then you agree, the posters premise that if the left did this, that we'd be melting, is false. Considering the left actually kept some of Trump's tariffs from his first term.
Also, is this your proof that the left isn't globalist first? Can you give me any other policies or tenants of the Democrat party that puts America first over globalism?
And.... so you then agree, that the melting you are doing over tariffs is quite stupid?

If the result of a trade war is expanded free trade, why would people who have a firm grasp of economics freak out and say things like OP.
