Now there is a class of pt that is legitimately self pay, but they're so few and far between, I forget what they're called.
I have personally paid for ER services for employees on multiple occasions. No one ever acted like it was even slightly out of the ordinary. It's a very common thing in construction and oilfield work.

Here's the entire post you're attempting to respond to. You mistakenly missed some context. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify and repost.
"Self pay is the language that was adopted years ago because it sounds better than indigent. It's meant to "preserve dignity" or whatever. Hospitals no longer use the word indigent and they haven't in years. In fact, now that we're talking about it. I haven't heard that word since 2004.
Practically speaking, indigent and self pay are the exact same thing. Now there is a class of pt that is legitimately self pay, but they're so few and far between, I forget what they're called.
Any pt that enters a hospital with a payor type, be that Medicaid, Medicare, Medicare HMO or commercial is by definition, not "self pay".
I'm just trying to tell you how all this is man. You can dismiss it if you want. I'm ok with that".

Just park an ICE vehicle by the ER door

They need to be deported and get Healthcare in their own country.

Yes, in their home country.

Sounds like a GREAT place for ICE to be.

Now if you really want to get pissed off, we can talk about the health benefits convicted felons get.
No thanks, bro. I'm already quiet pissed off enough.

You have no idea how EMTALA works

I posted this on the first page....
quote:
From a federal standpoint, illegal aliens only qualify for emergency medicaid, such as labor and delivery and legitimate medical crisis. Federal emergency medicaid won't be cut and this represents less than 1% of total medicaid costs.
Federal law requires hospitals to provide emergency care to all patients, regardless of immigration status. Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). Emergency Medicaid reimburses hospitals for these services.
Regular medicaid is funded by individual states and subsidized by the Federal Government. Some states allow illegal aliens access to state medicaid programs. The government is talking about decreasing federal matching funds from 90% to 80% for those states that continue this practice. Only 14 or 15 states do this, which isn't alot.
Well the reduction for those states will be made up some how, some way. Be that wholesale medicaid cuts, higher taxes, and/or higher provider rates that will ultimately result in higher commercial premiums. I doubt these states will do away with medicaid benefits for illegals.
All of this is a nice enough symbolic gesture I suppose but doesn't really amount to much more than that.
I know exactly how EMTALA works. I deal with it daily. Oh, and the post you're actually responding to, has nothing to do with EMTALA. Go back and re-read it.
