I have come to believe that patriotism is a form of bias and emotionalism that can be too easily used to manipulate the people and obscure truth.

Do you see how quickly self professing patriots have been redefined as domestic terrorists and bigots?

The problem with patriotism as commonly practiced is that it is all too often a profession of loyalty to and admiration for institutions and flags and historic personalities, and too rarely focused on ideals.

I don't think America is at all what the founders wanted it to be.

So why be patriotic?

I don't think out military any longer concerns itself with fighting for freedom or democracy for it's citizens or others around the world.

So why be patriotic?

And I don't think the flag actually means the same thing to most people

So why be patriotic?

I just don't see it any more

In the beginning, the founders had similar world views, and while there were disagreements, each side understood the other and thus, they were capable of constructing compromise. Their arguments were more philosophically based.

Today, I don't even understand most people. And I certainly don't feel united to them.

I am no more united to the average American than I am to the Average European or Russian.

So I guess it's best we not stand together for anthems or flags. Because we don't know why we stand. Or we have different reasons for standing.
Or, we would rather not stand at all.

You’re doing what the Dims do si well....redefining words. The Dims have taken the English language and butchered it to promote their destructive ideology.

Patriotism is not about just blindly loving the American government and the country in its current form. Your Patriotism should be towards the Constitution and for the concept of America, including rememberance of the fallen who fought for the Constitution.

Our country is currently occupied by a hostile regime. Reverence to America does not mean reverence to the hostile regime.

Because some of us arent as easily broken. We (patriots) still believe that we live in the greatest country on Earth, and likely the last beacon of hope for the rest of the world, despite our many flaws.

We are all fortunate to be Americans, whether you believe so or not. And patriots most of all are proud to be American.

And as far as this being the greatest country in the world, I'm not so sure.

When Macron of France stands up and says that the American cancel culture is undermining the survival of France, then where is that "last bastion of freedom" exactly?

What is an American?

Soldiers in the Confederate States Army were Americans.

People from Mexico are Americans, because they are from the continent of America, as are people from Central and South America. Aren't they Americans?

What does "being an American" mean to you?

The Roman Empire was one of the greatest and most influential civilizations in world history. It began in the city of Rome in 753 BC and lasted for well over 1000 years. During that time Rome grew to rule much of Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa.

At its height it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1913 the British Empire held sway over 412 million people, 23% of the world population at the time, and by 1925 it covered 35,000,000 km2 (13,500,000 sq mi), 24% of the Earth's total land area. As a result, its constitutional, legal, linguistic, and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, it was described as "the empire on which the sun never sets" as the Sun was always shining on at least one of its territories.

We, the United States of America, for the past 100 years have held the largest GDP in the history of the world. The US has accomplished in it short history more than the rest of the world combined did for centuries.

"God has been very good to us. That we won the revolution was extraordinary. The Battle of Midway was extraordinary. I think one of the reasons God has been good to us is that we have done him honor. Unlike the other countries of the world that do not even invoke his name we do him honor" - former associate Supreme Court Justic Antonin Scalia

Well we no longer pay honor to God Almighty. And we no longer diligently adhere to the constitution as originally intended.

So maybe it's best we grow up and realize that we hold the same status as Vichy France.

Who is "we" you speak of? Maybe "they" but true patriots honor God and love the Constitution. Ben Franklin said "A Republic, if you can keep it", it is a patriots job to fight for and to keep it, not to mope and give up because the big mean left is too much.
