Just for shite and giggles:

quote:

The hundreds of "I Love NY" highway signs that cost taxpayers $8.1 million are illegal, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which claims state officials knew the signage violated federal law prior to its installation.

The Federal Highway Administration told Fox News the 514 bright blue placards, which cost roughly $15,000 each, must be modified because they amount to advertisements -- instead of being navigational or safety-related -- and are a dangerous distraction to drivers.

The signs remain part of an ongoing dispute between New York state and the federal government. According to multiple press reports, the government last year threatened fines and the potential withholding of federal funds if New York does not comply with the law.

Nothing says reasonable expense like tourism advertising. smdh

Honestly though, does the 5th most visited city in the world really need to advertise to get tourists? Everyone wants to go see NYC at some point in their lives. Do something about all the crime and homeless people. Or better yet, give that money back to the tax payers.

Cuomo loves harboring illegal things, so I have a feeling those signs aren't going down without a fight.

So just add "Buckle up for Safety" on the bottom.

Then charge $25 grand a piece

I will admit, I find myself gazing at the peach when crossing the Ga state line.

How in the HOLY HELL does a sign like that, which is mass produced and should be thus discounted, cost $15k each? It's just metal and paint.

Same reason they were put up in the first place, so a few people could get a nice chunk of taxpayer money without having to do much.

They're pushing their ILoveNY.com website and the state's I Love NY mobile app--which are both likely filled with links encouraging visitors to spend money.

That said, I loathe fedgov.

We have signs that aren't navigation related. Not a big deal .

The sign industry hires lobbyist too.

Have you ever noticed how often they replace interstate signs? Do you notice how they do not try to reuse existing concrete pad and good, heavy poles? And have you noticed how mile markers get fancier and fancier?

We in La. might have roads that are substandard, but we have some great signs on our interstates.

Those signs are actually informing drivers of something. They don't just say "Hey! Texas is great!"

Oh, I'm with you 100%.
I was just responding to the line in the article that claimed road signs must be "navigational or safety-related."
I'm not sure I could effectively argue that an anti-littering campaign meets that criteria.
Maybe it does?

Bottomline: Secession is best .

It's so ridiculous it's comical. You could buy a decent car for that price.

I don't see how these are much different than the blue signs that tell you what food/gas/hotels are available at each exit along the interstate. I always assumed that the companies on those signs paid to have their logo on the signs. The $15,000 price tag seems hefty though.
