Of course there is. That is where the Trump tariff case is headed next.

You're addressing political rationale for tariffs which is not nuance, it's simply a different topic.

That reads funny, I suppose you mean "After 20 years, I have come to accept that strange men on a political discussion board I will never meet, enjoy talking about me having sex with other men"?

Remember, the experts abounded when he first started enacting the tariffs. Then the tariffs worked and they STFU. They’ll STFU again.

what about an american company that owns a manufacturing plant in asia that builds products for that american company? and these products are not made competitively in the usa. do we raise tariffs 300% to force that company to bring back the manufacturing to the usa?
You tariff those products at the rate you tariff the rest of the country's output.

Whether you agree with the tariffs or not, Trump has been preaching them since the 80s. For four decades he's been saying the exact same thing when it comes to tariffs.

well, looks like today will not be the day. "U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has yet to update its Cargo System Management Service to remove the duties imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)." we will wait until tomorrow to release the containers. let's hope tomorrow is the day!

The same progressives who think an income tax of 50% or more for top earners is a great idea also say that 10-15% reciprocal tariffs are a tax and devastating to the economy. Progressives were all about some protectionism before Trump.

The first is progressive and the second is regressive. Also, it is not true that progressives were protectionist before Trump. They dropped their protectionism with the implementation of NAFTA. Bill Clinton ratified NAFTA.

There are no American companies in China. They have to divest ownership.

And yes... you punish the entire country for not protecting intellectual property. These aren't 1 time occurrences. The laws of economics anticipate that they will continually violate property rights when they get away with it (economics is the study of human behavior with financial incentives).

If I have to explain my comment then the person who doesnt understand tariffs is you.

If you care about sovereignty and not allowing the US to get in a place where we rely on other countries (that seem to hate us) for our necessities- yes raise the tariffs and bring manufacturing home.

If just want cheap shite- don’t raise them.

There the answer to your question.

That's funny.
Im imagining Benny Hill cops running around with their funny hats and batons chasing down global "bad actors" to that funny music.
Morgan Freeman's quote in Shawshank best pegs what international law truly is.
Violation of international law
is a politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job"
There is never any enforcement. There aren't any teeth.

The teeth come from those with the ability to inflict consequences. Real meaningful consequences. Like Trump's tariffs.

Tariffs are tariffs. Just like taxes are taxes. Exports are exports. Imports are imports. There is always nuance (political, social, financial). You can dip your head in the sand and sing Lala all you want. But tariffs are a stick. Or a carrot.
Economics is the study of human behavior within a system of financial incentives. The entire field of economics holds the nuance.
