I despise the phrase ‘giving back to my community’

Aside from the fact that it implies that I somehow took something from my community, it completely ignores the frickton of property and sales taxes and other fees I am forced to pay into my city at the point of a gun.
This is one of those namby pamby progressive phrases that people repeat without even thinking about what they are saying yet a message is being sent.
What are people ‘giving back’?

Just volunteer at the food bank and quit bitching already.

Only thieves have to give back.
Others gave a good or service in exchange for what they got from said community.

I agree
It’s a silly phrase
When I make a nice income by engaging in voluntary transactions with other, I am not getting anything of value from them without first offering them something of value.
“Giving back” is essentially giving back twice

Usually just a little time or energy to help make their community a little better.
Sorry you hate it.

If you feel like this about taxes
I'd bet a dollar (pre tax) that you also think government and its programs are worthless, ineffecient, or ineffective. As such, you're smart enough to realize that people have needs that cannot be possibly met by such a worthless institution and your selfless act of giving intangibles such as your time make a meaningful difference to the community you are a part of.

Quotes that are used to make the speaker look to others:
“Giving back to the community”
“We should unite and come together”
“We(a city) are with you(victimized city)”
“I wish nothing but the best for you”(dumped person message about their ex-gf/bf)

Yes. I have no problem with the idea of giving my time.
It is the giving ‘back’ that rubs me the wrong way.

Did you never receive someone's time that didn't have to give it to you when you were coming up?

That's not 'giving back'. That's just 'giving'. And it's a good thing, don't get me wrong. But it's not an obligation - I'm with the OP on this one.

"Giving back" goes hand in hand with "you didn't build that."

I never use the phrase giving back to my community. I do however tell people I support my community. I support it through taxes. I'm still waiting on my community to give something back to me.

Such a typical selfish, greedy white male thread.

It's over used but a nod to make owns place better.

I don't "give back to the community" I just "give to the community whether I like it or not"
It's called paying taxes.

If white males didn't "give back to the community" the community would starve.

Yup, fully agree. I give back what I feel like giving back, and I sure don't get a whole lot in comparison to the ridiculous amount of taxes we have to pay.

It’s a synonym for volunteering. Nothing more. Unwad your little girl panties.
