The answers to why Hungary is still in the EU are telling. It's just the case that Orban tried to play both sides. He was good at the propaganda aspect but remarkably bad at actually gaining anything when invariably Hungary complied anyway.

Correct. I think the whole allied with Russia thing made it difficult as well as his corruption. If he had played it straight and tried to play both sides more intelligently and purely he may have been able to pull it off better

What do you think Hungary produces that would make them a net producer at this point?
They are a poor country and very poor for the EU. The EU is investing in them so that they develop to become less poor and a more robust trading partner in the long term.
This exact path is done wonders for several former Soviet Bloc countries, who now enjoy better economies and a higher standard of living than Russia. That is why the EU is such an existential threat for Putin, because it shows how badly he has failed and how widely successful organizations like the EU, which foster free trade counter to Putin's forced subservience, have been.
If Hungary were to leave the EU, it would become poor and its socioeconomic status and standard of living would devolve. If they chose to go with Russia as their puppet, it would accelerate this decline.
