Guy had balls. Even if you don’t agree, he took on the unions and essentially took away their power, and they were pretty badass.

Started a 40 year economic explosion that lifted, not just the United States, but most of the world’s living standards, all the while dumping world communism onto the ash heap of history.

You mean the greatest economic expansion in the history of the world? Or perhaps you’re referring to the fact that when Reagan took over we were losing a struggle with world communism, and a year after he left office the Berlin Wall came down, and we entered a decades long period referred to as Pax Americana?

The national debt was about 50% of GDP when he took office and about 60% when he left office. And for that we got the collapse of communism. Great bargain. Reagan left future generations with an additional 10% debt to GDP and no more fear of nuclear holocaust.

All those Reagan Democrats agree. He was re-elected on 525 electoral votes.

Don't know how Reagan would have handled it because Nixon had already cleaned it up. We know LBJ let it burn.

Nancy didn't start speaking for him until late second term.

I wish Jill would have started speaking for Joe years ago.

He’d have his hands tied as much as Bush or Obama did. He never went rogue from his handlers. It would probably be like if Mitt was president right now.

Reagan was responsible for two things that utterly fricked the country for the immediate and long-term future:

1. Married the GOP to social conservatives, which not only poisoned them to a great many potential voters but undermined every principle of economic conservatism they ever held. Only with Trump has the GOP begun to distance themselves at all from this. It will be decades before this association changes.

2. Brought the Bushes into the White House, allowing a Neo-Con takeover of America.

Well he started the War on Drugs that led to proactive policing that led to not only erosion of rights but also the militant mindset of cops creating most of the present problems.

So that’s how Reagan handled it.

Go listen to his 1964 speech “A Time for Choosing”. Replace anything he mentions with a current equivalent. The speech still holds up 50 years later
