The answer to the OP is simple. This was a 'nationalized election.' IE, in most mid terms the candidates for House and Senate argue about locally important issues. This year the GOP focused on one unified national issue:
DO YOU HATE OBAMA? IF 'YES', VOTE FOR US.
It worked. Therefore, the question is:
Why do people hate Obama now, but not in 2012? Beats all hell outta me. I hated him before he ran for his first term. He's a communist. It was an easy call.

I don't think the number of people who hate Obama changed very much. The coalition Obama built was wide over a bunch of different groups but not very deep in conviction.
The people with conviction showed up to give Obama the middle finger.

Don't underestimate the power the media still has. The riffraff needed for Obama to get elected but who didn't show up are not exactly informed. If the only info one gets is snipets of left-leaning media, it can definitely have an effect.

I see your point and I'd describe it this way... the people who re-elected Obama 2 years ago did so without as much passion as the people who voted against him on Tuesday. I think that means a lot more people actually hate Obama today than two years ago.

A lot of the Obama vote was also people turned off by the "homophobic/racist/backwards" Republicans. There weren't any "legitimate rapes" to get those voters out.
Well executed safe campaigns got it done.

Only 30% chose to voice their opinion. Now it's easy to guess who those were....

I think less than 1/1000000th of the Obama voters know about your reference.

Much of the anger was directed at the gov bailout of the banks...it was very anti-gov. YWIA.

You think voter fraud only goes one way?

According to this board, pretty much, yeah.
ETA: Are you suggesting that the GOP stole the mid-terms through fraudulent voting???

99.99 of us still are. I'm not so sure the same thing can't happen all over again. And why not? Where is the risk? And neither side of the isle seems to concerned about it. Perhaps a wall st wizz can set me straight?
I just don't remember seeing libertarians among that crown there. Could be I just don't remember.

Lots of low info voters don't turn up for midterm elections.

Minorities, youth, and single women rarely show up for mid-terms, allowing republicans to generally have the advantage.
In 2006 mid-term, Dems picked up 5 Senate seats and 34 House seats.

Honestly, Americans are pissed off at all politicians right now.
BHO is seen as the head of the country, so his party caught the most blow back for it.
If there were a viable third party, we may have been throwing D's AND R's out of office.
I would fall in this category. I didn't vote and don't give a shite about the results. Why? Because I don't immerse myself in domestic politics any longer. I have no faith that either party cares more about the country than what is good for their party. So, I rarely watch network news and either block or hang up on all political calls during election periods. Basically, I don't give a frick who runs the country, because it seems to never really alter my life in a significant manner.
Politicians are here for our entertainment - they are clowns and for those who campaign and donate to their campaign, you are funding and supporting a bunch of stooges.
If I had my way, I'd outsource the entire federal govt to Google and fire as many politicians & govt workers as possible.
Has a new era dawned for American? Hell no. You nor I will see very few significant changes. Why, because we elect people who play the game. They, by nature are insincere, ego-driven, power-hungry, mediocre people (see our last 2 presidents). They are selling shite that I refuse to buy.
Bottom line - I don't need to rely on a politician to live well or be happy.
