It was extraordinarily expensive. Before anyone went, it was a race. After we won it, and it didn't appear that the Soviets were trying to get there (second), then we lost our stomach for the additional expense and resources.
Then we tried the whole LEO reusable thing, with essentially "late" Apollo technology and the ships did not last as long as expected.
Frankly, we should have ceded the thing to private industry to continue after we broke all that ground with NASA, but it wasn't meant to be.

All I know is NASA isn't doing shite with Starliner unless they can get those orbit issues figured out. That thing flew like a drunk sailor during the test they just did causing them to abort the space station dock.
