This is the real debate we should be having. We can debate gun control until we are blue in the face, but when someone steps onto campus with the intent to kill, there is not a gun law, a gun ban, nor a cheap suit politician that can save you.

My question to all of you is what tactics should be taught and implemented to increase the chances of survival in these events? Is simply locking the doors and hiding under a desk enough? Personally, I think these kids need to taught to immediately drop their cell phones and arm themselves with anything they can get their hands on. We all have an instinctive fight or flight mechanism, but I'm afraid we are conditioning these kids to flee in instances where fighting back might actually save lives.

Combo lock box with pistol in every classroom.

19 yr old wanna be soldier trying to kill students will have to be willing and ready to take fire in any classroom he enters

No. No it isn’t. How sad that this is a thing that people have just accepted you can’t prevent so you must prepare for with child evasion training.

This is a thread about survival in an active shooter situation. If you want to debate gun laws, find another thread.

It’s sad but a reality we have to face. There is no way to guarantee someone that wants a gun to do things like this won’t be able to get one. Concentrating on (1) killing or otherwise stopping the threat and (2) getting first aid to the victims ASAP should be the priority to reduce deaths. What’s sad is how many of those deaths were preventable by the application of rapid first aid to stop bleeding or sucking chest wounds within a minute or two of the injury with tourniquets or chest seals. I’ve recently started wearing an ankle holster with such items on the chance they may ever save my life or give me the opportunity to save someone else.

So if a teacher can’t pass the CC qualifications, what then?

Fire the teacher?

1. Look for cover. If there is none find concealment.

2. Assess the situation. How many shooters, how many guns, body armor, etc.

3. If possible, relay info to police/first responders.

4. Determine course of action. Fight back? Remain concealed?

5. Enact your plan.

Can’t pass the cc qualification? Sitting for a day and hitting a paper target a few feet in front of them? Someone would have to have a significant disability to not be able to pass. Either way, we don’t need to jump to mandatory carrying, just let the teachers who are already qualified to carry off campus (and are doing so without any additional threat to the public) to carry on campus.

I would not want someone incapable of doing this to be teaching school.

ETA: You shouldn't either.

What percentage of schools do you think have 1 qualified CC holder on staff? 2? 3 or enough to make a difference in a situation like this.

Quit making school zones, "Gun Free Zones".

Hire veterans as security guards

I work in a rather large building, where CC is permitted. From talking to the security folks here, there are between 25-30 known CC holders that carry every day. These are just the ones that have informed them, which there is no requirement to do.

A few years back we had several credible threats against the building and occupants. At that time, I made my active shooter plan. Where I'd go, what I'd do depending on the threat. I'd suggest everyone else do the same.

I don’t know, what percentage of the population have concealed carry permits now? They are already carrying guns in public (and with a significantly reduced statistical likelihood of commiting a crime than the general population). Why do we stop them from doing the same on a school campus?

Keep in mind, there is absolutely no guarantee that you can stop someone that wants to commit a mass shooting. But mass shootings stop when they are met with armed resistance. We have a segment of the population that have already made the conscious decision to be prepared to meet deadly threats with deadly force. Why don’t we let them be an additional factor in our plan to prevent and disrupt these types of attacks?
