How similar is America to the 1920's Weimar Republic?

The Weimar Republic was doomed to fail when it was created after WWI, and after the depression was ripe to be taken over by an extremist ruling party (left or right).

Germany just shamefully surrendered war, signed the Treaty of Versailles which from the German people, was completely anti-German and an unfair deal. Hyperinflation, low employment, and a Democratic Republic with a Parliament made up of extremes of both sides (Left and Right).

Hiddenberg thought he could keep things in check, but underestimated what Hitler was capable of and his political skills when he appointed him Chancellor in 1933.

Right now, save for a Reagan like moment in the 1980's, reuniting the majority of the country, Balkinization may be the most healthy option on the table. The two competing sides in this country have completely separate ambitions and goals which seem destined for one extreme to take over, ultimately by force.

As the left continues to get more and more extreme, Newton's Law may eventually come into play, creating an opposite reaction just as extreme. This is not something I want to see, but it seems to be the path we the country is on.

If you label someone as something for long enough, eventually they'll just say frick it and embrace the label. "The Powers That Be" are playing a very dangerous game.

We don't have to pay for groceries BEFORE we shop.

My mom grew up in Germany during that time.

The degeneracy is very similar, many of the famous book burnings were homosexual and trans trash. I'm ready for the late 20's 1930's equivalent.

As long as they keep this economic house of cards going it won't happen. And the thing is China and our current leaders want it to keep going. China likes us functioning but weak. Strong enough to keep the status quo in our country but not strong enough to stop them when they make their moves in the pacific.

As long as 80+% of this country can eat whenever they want and be entertained by the tv show, movie industry, live sports, video games, and porn nothing major will change.

The radical left is too small to hand over any part of the country to them. They would be a mere small minority without the support of oligarchs, globalists and a substantial element of the ruling elite.

They will use the radical left as long as they are useful to them.

I think it is more similar to Nicholas II reign in Russia coming to an abrupt end after 1918.

Everything around him was going to shite but his advisors kept telling him to put on a lid and go hang out in his million dollar mansions in the country.

we all know how that ended up, abdicated his throne and his family was brutally murdered and dumped in the forest by some communist scumbags.

I don't necessarily agree with that. The depression hit and when all of those loans were called in, it doomed it. But there was a good chance that it would have survived if not for the depression. American loans had helped stabilize the economy. Hitler and the Nazis in the election before the collapse had not done well and they were on the verge of being bankrupt. The depression was a godsend and the savior of the Nazi's. I do agree that the leaders of the government that had gone along and signed the treaty were hated by the Nazis, but the Nazis were losing power/influence before the depression hit.

We’re past that. We’re in early 1930s Germany.

Potentially worse, because of the instant mass communication. The power to call flashmobs, incite hatred on the net.

There are similarities on that front, but culturally we’re much closer to Germany.

Much closer to the Soviet Union circa 1987 in my humble opinion
This. But I'd put it at about 1985. Including an elderly, decrepit, incapable leader (Konstantin Chernenko). By 1987 USSR was already panicked and trying to reform their way out of communism (it was too late, like it is for us).

My body is ready. I will move, reluctantly, if need be.

A scary thought.

What's really frightening is that with all the anti-government furore fomenting, and "Let's Go Brandon" reverberating throughout college football stadia across the fruited plain, the conditions for some crazed rightwing demagogue to establish a beachhead here are not all that far-fetched.

The Soviet Union was a managed decline with certain oligarchs raiding control of the national wealth. Same here. Look at Larry Fink and BlackRock. Look at the billionaires wealth grow during Covid. (Half of all billionaires in America are, ahem, j's)

100% spot on. America has became a country that is ran by oligarchs.

A hard right wing movement that would completely shift us back to the founding principles is the only thing that can save this country. Probably too late. That is why I am for secession/balkanization.

Oh history will repeat itself. Their will be a blow back reaction to the leftist push and it won’t be pretty. Leftist will regret the day they are doing this.
