There are currently 40 active duty four-star officers in the uniformed services of the United States: 11 in the Army, 4 in the Marine Corps, 9 in the Navy, 14 in the Air Force, 2 in the Coast Guard, and none in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Of the seven federal uniformed services, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps is the only service that does not have an established four-star position.

Zero

At this level of politics you shouldn't be there if you need a check.

This is a service to your country, not a retirement fund.

The exact same that should be every career politicians salary: $50K/year MAX!!

The people that want to be there for that headache will actually WANT to be there for their constituents instead of padding their crooked pockets and working towards a retirement pension. They shouldn't get government benefits either. If so, then obamacare it is for ALL of them!

State level should be not a penny more than $15-$20K/year MAX!! Especially here in Louisiana and even that may be too much. They all suck royal arse and too many good ol boys still infesting local and state government. Frick them!

I don't want career positions being paid low wages like 50k a year.

But 250k-300k is fine for a justice. The prestige of the Court means you just don't truly have to compete for talent.

Now at lower levels of law, it can be an issue.

The politicians lining their pockets aren't doing so out of their salary. They are doing so through under the table benefits and post-political career options. High political salaries actually help create a buffer against corruption.

If you limit their salaries like that it becomes even cheaper to buy them off.

there are TWO factors to whether a Salary is the right one. 1)Does it attract candidates for the job and 2)Are they GOOD candidates.

Are you saying people like Scalia, and this most recent nomination are not the "right people for the job"? Because if you are, then you are definitely the one who is wrong.

If that is not what you are saying, then you refuted your own argument.

A 4-Star makes base pay, better than $17K per month depending on time in service. $20K isn't uncommon.

No an O-10 with over 40 years of service makes $15,583.20 as his base pay.

But the fact that you could strip the salaries away altogether and still have people lining up to spend $500m to get the job suggests otherwise.

That has less to do with how much money they will make and more to do with how much influence their donors think they can buy.

Trump is the outlier. He spent a drop in his bucket to get a job he REALLY wanted.

That seems about right. Generals in the military can make north of 300k right now.

You have no idea what you're talking about. 4 star base pay is capped at $15,583, whether it's 20 or 40 years time in service.
