How far from U.S. Mainland to snag a new state?

What's the process of creating a new U.S. state? How far can we reach out from the mainland? How the hell did Hawaii make the starting lineup??
As unthinkable as this might sound, wouldn't it be sweet to have Taiwan as #51?? One long swim away from China? The world has gotten a lot smaller in the last 20 years.

I don't think we see a new state anytime soon, but when/if it does happen it's going to be a current U.S. territory. Most likely Puerto Rico.

We should just start breaking up the states into smaller states. Help eliminate the power of the concentrated democrats. Like breaking up California into six states would make 3 or 4 republican states instead of one liberal state.

Good idea. If we wanted to remain contiguous, Washington state for Alberta is a good swap.
Also, in terms of territories, we should go after Greenland. Chock full of natural resources.

I think it is actually an interesting question. Based on the tedious goofy replies above in this thread no one really knows the answer.
