I downvoted because the U.S. economy has been living a big, fat lie since 1913.

The 'very 1st thing' you need to do is STOP believing fed/gov statistics...
Want the TRUTH about the economy? www.shadowstats.com
Do w/the formulas fed/gov USED in the PAST and not the way they have them intentionally ALTERED today...

Got that right. The CPI should be referred to as the CP "lie" if one wants to be accurate with their fake numbers.

I did some basic math.
In 1963 a yearly minimum wage was 1/5 the cost of the average house.
Today, a yearly minimum wage is 1/13 the cost of the average house.
Even if I'm a bit off, the difference is profound.

older gentleman that I know once told me that he and his wife were purchasing a new house, a new car, and a washing machine on two minimum wage salaries.
You could do that now if you only had the bills they had then.
They didn’t have phone, internet, satellite tv, and all that other BS then to pay monthly.

deltaland,
See my previous post regarding the percentage of minimum wage to average house cost. I get your point, but mine still stands.

How much better is the crappiest new house now compared to the average house back then?

Jake88,
I don't argue on the internet. I like to look people in the eye for discourse that has any amount of depth, but I'll make this one point and then retreat.
Your argument is that the average house today is so much more expensive, relatively, than the average house built in 1963 because it is much nicer.
Ok.

My point was a low end house now is much nicer than the average house in 1963, hence the disparity in minimum wage and the cost of a house now, compared to 1963 is not as significant or important as your post makes it seem.
