re: How do so many Americans have a fundamental misunderstanding of the 2nd amendment?

I'll let you scour the internet for laws against producing and owning weapons of mass destruction.
I already linked one, champ. But under your view of the 2nd Amendment, shouldn't said laws be unconstitutional? Why haven't you challenged them? Why can't I buy a nuke, given the 2nd Amendment is absolute in your eyes?

And they'd also be in the category "attempting to take entire cities off the map".
17 people is a small town. 500 injured and 50 dead is a pretty good sized town back in 1776. But you're perfectly fine with the means to kill that many and more, on a whim.
quote:
I'm much, much smarter than you in every way.
And we know that because you had to point it out using 'much' twice.
My point - which you still won't get (your next post will prove that point) - is that we already have limits on the right of the citizenry to own any and all types of weapons. We have already decided, as a nation, that the 2nd Amendment is not absolute. We are not legally able to own any weapon we want for whatever purpose we want. Given that, why not implement some tougher gun laws that we know can save lives? There's no harm in that, just lives saved.
Instead, you're content to let children die for your fetish.

Of course not, nobody's going to seize any guns. That's the boogeyman your NRA rep tells you to get you to buy more guns, nothing more.

It ends with the government seizing the guns of law abiding citizens.

It’s tough to argue a couple AR-15s will overthrow the government
At this point advanced computer capabilities would be the realistic weapon of choice against the government if being honest.

Time and again your party has proven that if an inch is given that next up is the mile. We don't trust you and never will.

what does the system you speak of consist of?
Gun control measures that we know reduce the prevalence of firearms in the population, and reduce lives.
Some examples are universal background checks, longer waiting periods, stricter penalties for facilitating things like straw purchases, mandatory safety courses and licensure and insurance, efforts like permit-to-purchase, etc.
There are things that we know work, and that a supermajority of the country supports. But we have a small minority that fetishizes firearms and prevents any progress from being made, so Americans keep dying.

Except what you're proposing doesn't have order or a system. You're pulling weapons out of thin air and banning them, for reasons you pulled out of thin air. It's just like the last "assault weapons" ban that took all sorts of cosmetic features and banned guns based upon those features.
Your entire impetus for wanting to ban guns is arbitrary. Why else would you make a push to ban guns after a school shooting but sit on your arse while the bodies pile up in Chicago?

Youn guys know, don't you, that Justice Scalia said in Heller that there could be reasonable regulation of guns.
The District of Columbia v. Heller ruling still looms large today because it left open a lot of questions that are now at issue. Consider semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15 rifle, which has been used in a number of high-profile shootings, including the deadly massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Are bans on this kind of weapon allowed under Heller?
quoting Scalia:
“like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited.” It is “not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever

So you're not willing to give an inch over a slippery slope fallacy.
At least you're honest about what failures make you okay with children dying.

Fify.
Mr I don't give a frick about 46k innocent people who die from second hand smoke every year nor the much larger total of cigarette caused deaths around the half million mark

Just like gay marriage turning into transgender bathrooms and Obamacare turning into a push for universal healthcare?

So what do you propose to do about the millions of guns ALREADY in circulation? Do I get to keep my AR-15 under your plan?

Black people have a hard road in this country. They do t need you piling on with your stereotypical fingerprinting.

Yes, it does.

I have yet to 'propose' any ban on any singular weapon or class of weapons. That you think otherwise is a testament to your lack of middle school education.

Your entire impetus for wanting to ban guns is arbitrary.
Again with the word you don't understand! My impetus for wanting to have stricter gun control is that it will save lives. Full stop.

I'd like stricter gun control laws nationwide, which would also reduce the number of gun-related deaths in Chicago. Did you think you had a point here, because you really didn't...

3% of the population owns 50% of the guns. A reasonable buy-back program, or stricter penalties for guns used in crimes (e.g. if they were all in a database and you didn't report a gun stolen and it's used in a crime...penalties for you) should be a good start. This isn't a particularly hard question - every other developed country in the world has solved it, save for us.

If you want to. I don't particularly care what you do with your sex toy in the swamp at night.

Ok. Give us your gun laws you think are going to all of a sudden make criminals not kill people.
Bear in mind, you've already said you're not for banning guns or confiscation, so that means the 300 million guns already in circulation can't be touched and neither can future purchases of those guns.
Go...
