How do bots work on message boards?

I'm asking because I truly have no idea. I just started thinking about it when the one "We are the bad guys" comment in the last Russia/Ukraine thread was polling at a smoldering 79 percent upvotes.

One of the most ridiculous revelations in the Twitter files was that this Hamilton 68 operation, which was supposedly tracking Russian bots that pushed a hashtag to release Devin Nunes' memo that would have exonerated Trump, was totally lying. Twitter knew it and didn't say anything.

I don't think bots on message boards are an issue. Dumbasses are.
Think of the exposure of X vs. TigerDroppings/TexAgs (etc.) There's not much payoff to come to train bots on sites other than X, FB, LinkedIn, etc. Charging people even 50 cents to be able to post to X/Twitter would clear out a ton of trash.
