Standard starting rank under the Direct Commission Officer program
He would have to be a professional in some sense (lawyer, physician, etc) to receive a direct commission as an O3. What was his profession?

What part of "no training" did you not understand?

He didn't. He was commissioned Ensign in 2009 and put on LT in 2013, right TF on time.

ETA: all of that is linked from the article, in a doc that includes his DD214, his oath/appointment, and a bunch of FITREPs. The author just has no fricking clue what he's reading, and is counting on an audience that doesn't either.

Was just about to say this. It depends on what your degree is. I didn't know about JAG Corps and finance entering with automatic commission, but I know for certain you can gain automatic commission with a medical degree.

Think about it, they're not making a licensed practitioner do time as a lower enlisted soldier. They're too qualified. You wouldn't get any doctors willing to sign up.

Ya'll acting like making Lieutenant is a big deal. It's the officer equivalent of being an enlisted seaman or airman. Do your time, get advanced.

The first time an enlisted Soldier has to go before a service-wide selection board is his E7 look. The first time an officer has to is for his O3 look.

Which one? Selection rate for O3 is 85%.

You automatically advance from O-1 all the way up to O-3. To get beyond O-3 you have to pass a promotion board.

I’m not sure outranking 11 enlisted ranks can be considered starting at the very bottom.

Lieutenant board. Easier than making Third Class Petty Officer.

ETA: Nevermind. No board for lieutenant. So like I said earlier, the equivalent of making E-3.

The Secretary of the Navy is authorized to recommend all fully qualified lieutenants junior grade for promotion to lieutenant without selection board action.

Wait, seriously? No board to make O3 in the Navy?

The other three branches require a board to advance beyond O2.
