How did John Kennedy get so popular in Louisiana?

The guy was a lifelong Democrat and got smoked by Mary Landrieu a decade ago.
Nowadays people go crazy when they see him. He comes out at Trump rallies and you’d think he was Trump himself.
He’s shown some real fight in the Senate and people love him for it. He would have beaten John Bel Edwards by 20 points.

I like Kennedy. He says what he thinks...and doesn't dance around it. Plus he comes off as very intelligent and well spoken. He was the second best speaker tonight...."Happy with crappy" was just funny...

I’ve never trusted the guy and in an election with a real opponent i think the one-liners will get old quick.

Not at all. What happened is that Rove courted him to switch sides as he was been a fiscal conservative all along and while state treasurer. Also, on local talk radio, he was a favorite guest to blow up Gov. Blanco's fiscal narrative post Katrina. He ran a campaign which had him not attending fundraisers or speaking around the state until the last few months of the race. He was leading in polls 9 months before election.
