quote:

The farm bill itself broke open partisan divisions in the House as Democrats abandoned negotiations with Republicans over the food stamp changes, which would require adults to spend 20 hours per week either working or participating in a state-run training program as a condition to receive benefits. Democrats argue that a million or more people would end up losing benefits as a result because most states don’t have the capacity to set up the training programs required.

quote:

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) described the legislation as “cruel” and argued that with the proposed changes to food stamps, “Republicans are taking food out of the mouths of families struggling to make ends meet.”

quote:

The legislation also would have extended the Agriculture Department’s subsidy program that compensates farmers when average crop prices fall below certain levels — and expanded by widening who counts as a “farmer,” for subsidy purposes.

I am glad it failed. The Farm bill subsidies date back to the great depression. It's time we stop subsidizing food.

Will this have any effect on eliminating that ethanol foolishness?

It amazes me that we actually pay farmers when market prices go down for their goods

All the farmers I know make tons of money. They tend to not pass it on to workers in the form of higher wages.

Normally I'm not big on making fun of the elderly suffering from dementia, but she keeps putting herself out there by not stepping down even though half the time she blathers about how bad the President is, she forgets which one she's bitching about. That the Dems in Congress still look to her for leadership is very telling about the Dems in Congress.

My entire family are farmers. And that is not true at all.

They can make money after they put in 40 years of hard work and being poor. But nobody is getting into farming to become rich. It takes decades

Sadly, no.

I hate the way leftists bastardize the word "families".

So... you disagree with food stamp cuts so you kill the bill that funds food stamps.

That’s a bold strategy there Cotton.

Ryan voted no on it, so theoretically he can bring it back up if they ever work out a compromise.

I'd like punch Nancy Pelosi right in the face. I'm just sick of her rhetoric

"If we let people keep more of their own money, they will die"

"If people have to go out and get a job they will die"

"People will literally die if Trump is elected"

That is not how this works. The price falls because of either oversupply or fall in demand for food.

Someone should tell Nancy the food stamps amount to "crumbs" so she needn't worry.

Get rid of food stamps and give that money to farmers

A farmer works 100 hours a week and people accuse them of getting “farm welfare”

It's a dumb argument anyway.

We must continue subsidizing food so the price doesn't go up too high when we pay for poor people's foods with food stamps.

I mean the tax payer is literally funding the food market on both ends. We subsidize the growers, and we are the customers LOL

Just cut subsidies and let the free market take care of it. And while we're at it, cut food stamps and let Darwin take care of that.

Admittedly my sample size is small. Two buddies that are sugar cane farmers. They do really really well.

People die every day.

A lot of the Dems’ constituents do this at an accelerated rate by shooting each other.

Iowa being so important in the political system is the main reason corn (ethanol) is subsidized.
