Niall Ferguson:

The midterms are going to be worse, a lot worse. Because never again will the network platforms in Silicon Valley allow them to use them as Donald Trump’s campaign used them in 2016. The sound of heads exploding on November the 9th of 2016 was deafening in California. They couldn’t believe that Facebook advertising had been so vital to Trump’s success. Which it was. I don’t think he would have become president without Facebook. As people think more and more about this they will I think begin to grasp the power of the platforms. I think the Russia issue is a distraction from the real question.

In February Facebook launched a new algorithm to ensure that conservative news would not spread on the social media platform. The algorithm change caused President Donald Trump’s engagement on Facebook posts to plummet a whopping 45%.

FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC, etc. give Trump all the free coverage he'll ever need.

Love all the neverTrumpers and left minded people applauding this while down playing Trump's social media use.

It's amazing how the reaction to Republicans winning is to double down on dirty tactics to suppress voter turnout.

Yep!

Trump's main way of communicating with the public without his message being distorted was social media.

FB just cut that voice in half!

FB is shadow banning people like Drudge. ETC...but it's all good.

Is this the thread where trumpkins will say that the government should regulate social media platforms to prevent a private business (publicly traded but still not public sector) from showing favoritism?

Is that now the business plan of these platforms?

I think Ferguson has his point, but if the Rs lose big in the midterms it’s because the people didn’t turn out to vote, which is a commonality of the party that won the presidency two years prior.

The Snowden leaks have demonstrated that companies like Google, Facebook and Apple have a cozy relationship with the NSA, so much so that they have willingly provided information about their customers to the most secretive and authoritarian branches of the federal government. When big government and big business collude in an attempt to simultaneously control the population via information manipulation and eliminate competition in the private sector, that is soft fascism.

These businesses are subsidized by the government and supply your personal information to the government. These businesses are more "national socialist" than totally private
