Just watched it for the first time.
Couldn’t help but think that none of the cast would’ve been in this had they known he would be OMB’s running mate.
Pretty good flick. The man has lived the American dream.
If we are lucky he will be POTUS in 2029.

If people knew where this guy came from to where he is today, there is no way you can’t admire the guy.
Unless you are beholden to the (D) that is. That makes me sad for my country.
What he has done gives me hope for my country.

Even disregarding political implications, very few Americans know how much white trash there is, and how their lives are. Consultants would fly in from SFO to meet me at NWA for a pitch, and the road back to the airport (it might have been Missouri) featured plenty of inhabited dwellings which had refrigerator boxes as front doors, etc. they had no idea.
Even pre meth, poorer parts of the Midwest and Appalachia were something to behold. Real stories told by real people tend to resonate, eh? I drove one of my exes to Indiana to meet my grandparents and she wouldn’t get out of the car at the gas station. Had to buy bottled water because out of the faucet it was so soft it smelled like a Japanese volcanic spring.

Politics aside, no, it’s not a good movie.
His story is no doubt compelling and he should be lauded for climbing out of that situation.

Movie aside, the book & real story were hailed by the very people who now hate him for his crime of being elected US Senator & running as Trump’s VP.
Just as they liked Trump. Before he beat Hillary.
Sadly, there’s a large group in this country who have been effectively brainwashed to reactively turn against others simply for wrongthink. Because they’ve been told that person is bad or having an opinion that doesn’t adhere to pre approved “trusted” view put out by the experts .

The movie received mostly poor reviews when it came out, which was before Vance’s foray into politics.

Maybe the movie did, but I kept hearing people rave about the book. Would not be the first time Hollywood did dishonor to the source material.

The guy was born and raised in a middle-class suburb of Dayton and lived fairly comfortably.
Why does everyone all of a sudden think he grew up in some mudhole near the holler in Harlan County?

What in the flying frick is your pie hole dribbling out? Did you read his book? Did you watch the movie?
Nothing about his actual upbringing is "middle class". He's lower middle class at best, with a mom who was a junky and a parade of "step dads" who ranged from also junkies to abusers to worse.
You are either a brainwashed liberal turd or just fricking ignorant. Either way, go away now.

This is what you consider "middle-class"?

Now do Kamala's upper middle class income homes.
F boy.

I think Ron Howard hates JD now.

Ending is underwhelming. But who could have guessed?

Neither one is great (and yes I’ve seen both the movie and read the book). The movie just felt stale compared to the narrative in the larger first half of Vance’s book but I imagine it’s difficult to capture the feel of what he was trying to achieve in film.
As far as the book, I thought it was another lazy misrepresentation of Appalachian culture. And there are a lot of people in the region that feel the same. Poverty, in particular, in places like Eastern Kentucky (where his Grandparents moved to Ohio from) are far more complex than the people there being lazy and drug-riddled. But I don’t really expect much from someone who didn’t actually live in Appalachia itself.

I’m convinced that nobody really likes JD Vance, regardless of political ideology.
As for the movie, it is mediocre,
As for the book and the story, it ages poorly for me as I get older.
