Henry Rollins on Robin Williams suicide

agree? disagree?
quote:
"How in the hell could you possibly do that to your children?" Rollins wrote. "I don't care how well-adjusted your kid might be – choosing to kill yourself, rather than to be there for that child, is every shade of awful, traumatic and confusing. I think as soon as you have children, you waive your right to take your own life. No matter what mistakes you make in life, it should be your utmost goal not to traumatize your kids. So, you don't kill yourself."
quote:
"I no longer take this person seriously," he continued. "I may be able to appreciate what he or she did artistically but it's impossible to feel bad for them. Their life wasn't cut short – it was purposely abandoned. It's hard to feel bad when the person did what they wanted to."

The libertarian in me says that we should let grown folks make this decision, because only that person has all the information needed.
The fighter in my says Robin Williams and most (not all) suicides are straight up cowards who are afraid of fighting - particularly when they leave family behind - children. Now in Williams' case, his youngest child is 23, so not quite as traumatic as leaving behind little ones.
But, he still ran out on all of them - and his friends and fans, as well.
And I know he had struggles with depression. I respect that. We all have troubles. I know he had health issues starting to crop up.
John Wayne didn't quit.

quote:Ignoring the physiology of major depression, one could hold that POV.
Their life wasn't cut short – it was purposely abandoned.
Just as one could proclaim an individual suffering from anorexia should simply eat a sandwich or two.
Mental disease is harder for the layperson to reconcile.

There's also a good chance that Henry Rollins doesn't know how depression works.

Disagree.
Robin Williams was ill. The problem with most positions like this is that they ignore the reality that depression is an illness, not just the feeling you get when LSU loses.

Or...maybe he does.
Sounds like he said ... "if you don't have kids ... go ahead, off yourself. But... if you do ... perhaps you should get a prescription of MAN THE frick UP."
But ... whatever ... I would find it very difficult to believe that Mr. Williams (whom I liked) ... had it worse than the vast majority of Americans.
Proceed with your excuses on his behalf.

The same could be said for a lot of people in this thread, as well.

He's clueless to major depression. It's a disease, an illness. Not a choice.

Like Rollins, you don't know how depression works. It is a chemical imbalance, not a case of the mopies.

Or maybe, just maybe offing yourself is a conscious decision that in Williams' (and so many others) case harms countless lives. If he was clinically depressed, there were other available options for treatment.
But yeah, we don't understand.

What was his clinical regimen, response, and alternative?

I agree with what was quoted in the OP at least.
I like Williams and his death is upsetting to me, but I would be distraught if one of my parents committed suicide...and I'm an adult man who is probably older than Robin William's children. God doesn't give all of us 50-60 years or more. With today's medical technology, he could easily live another 20-30 years.
Williams was facing Parkinson's and depression. The treatment for both severely limited his rapid fire comedic style and impacted his personality I'm sure....but it would not undermine his identity and role as a father, husband, etc.
This can be a lesson to the rest of us. If you are having trouble, please speak up. Get help before it gets out of control - especially if you are on prescription medication to treat another illness. There are always options.

I agree with what he said. Despite his possibly having serious depression problems, that's the coward's way out.
He had the means to get help.
