quote:

Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Bartholet, who runs the Child Advocacy Program at the university, says that homeschooling poses "real dangers to children and to society," that many of the parents "look to the Bible" instead of science for understanding the world, and that homeschooling should be prohibited except in rare, unique cases.  “The issue is, do we think that parents should have 24/7, essentially authoritarian control over their children from ages zero to 18? I think that’s dangerous,” Bartholet says. “I think it’s always dangerous to put powerful people in charge of the powerless, and to give the powerful ones total authority. Bartholet's views are detailed in an article she wrote for the Arizona Law Review and summarized in a Harvard Magazine article, "The Risks of Homeschooling."

quote:

In the summary of her 80-page article in the Arizona Law Review, it states, "This Article describes the rapidly growing homeschooling phenomenon and the threat it poses to children and society. "Homeschooling activists have in recent decades largely succeeded in their deregulation campaign, overwhelming legislators with aggressive advocacy. As a result, parents can now keep their children at home in the name of homeschooling free from any real scrutiny as to whether or how they are educating their children. "Many homeschool because they want to isolate their children from ideas and values central to our democracy, determined to keep their children from exposure to views that might enable autonomous choice about their future lives. "Many promote racial segregation and female subservience. Many question science.

It’s always about the children right?!

The real counterpoint isn't what she's suggesting - it's that a lot of parents are shitty and are poor educators and mentors to their kids.

I work with a guy who homeschools his kids. He and his wife both work full time. He has 4 preteen and teenagers that sit at home all day and play video games. Kid you not. All because they don’t want the government indoctrinating their kids. Blows my mind.
Of course my sister homeschools her kids and they are definitely smarter for it.

Yeah because teaching kids that men are women, white men are evil and our planet will end in 8 years if we don’t recycle is the kind of learning they need.

So she thinks it's dangerous for individual parents to have authority over their children but doesn't see it as dangerous to have a centralized government having authority over all children?

Yes. Having control over your children is authoritarian

I find it hilarious that she tries to argue that children in these environments are raised to not have the ability to make their own decisions.

Which can be translated very simply as she is annoyed that there are people she can't control and tell them what to think.

Just more typical liberalism. Their ideas are the default correct ones and any deviation should be squashed

I know people who co-oped their home schooling and hired private teachers. We chose to spend our money on parochial education. To each his own. There has to be an alternative to public education, and the influence of leftist teachers unions and nattering naysayers in government and academia.

There is no doubt that some parents do a poor job of home schooling their kids, and it’s also true that there are many bad teachers in public schools that also do a very bad job of educating children. But to make a board generalization about all home schooled children is ridiculous. Plus, what makes her value system more valid than any other?

The problem schools are facing is that qualities like racism, bigotry, homophobia, zenophobia are taught in homes, and innocent children bring those qualities to schools. Instead of bitchslapping the parents, Schools are left with the task of unteaching those qualities. It's not easy.

Let's examine this quote from the esteemed Uber Stable Person, Dr. Bartholet:
quote:

"Many promote racial segregation and female subservience. Many question science.

Homeschoolers aren't the only one promoting racial segregation. It's rife on college campuses right now.

Female subservience? Like cultures with over 70% single motherhood? Could that be construed as female subservience, Dr. Bartholet?

Questioning science? You mean like denying that life begins at conception? Or believeing that there are dozens of genders? Like that?

Weird, I thought the task of schools was to educate in English, math, science, history, etc. Kudos for hitting a lot of SJW/DNC buzzwords. You lost points for transphobia, patriarchy, and toxic masculinity, though.

"Many public school only advocates are doing so because they want to isolate someone else's children from ideas and values central to our democracy(such as rights endowed by our Creator, liberty, e pluribus unum) determined to keep someone else's children from exposure to views that might enable autonomous choice about their future lives.(like capitalism and diverse political viewpoints and concepts of content of character over color of skin or patriotism) "Many promote racial segregation and victimhood and white guilt and equity of outcomes and ethnic diversity over personal responsibility and real world consequences. Many question science and claim that students can be identified as whatever they choose on a daily basis. And promote the idea that the universe came from nothing in an unguided process to produce human intelligence.
