I grew up in Texas. It didn't mean anything then. It was mentioned in Texas History and a few blacks wore juneteenth shirts in the mid 90s when they started wearing all that Africa pride crap. No one ever celebrated it. It was simply a historical footnote.
I grew up in small town in north Louisiana, graduated in late sixties. Not sure when it started being celebrated. i just know my parents said don’t go to town that day. I thought i remembered it being on Saturdays but maybe not, as no one would be in town that day anyway. I really think that was not for safety but because it would just be crowded. Nothing ever happened that I know of.

Additional to what our paid holidays were a few years ago.
Most companies didn’t add a day, they remove it from a holiday. It’s like you aren’t reading and just replying. There are half dozen other federal holidays that companies don’t shut down for.

Made up holiday...
It's not made up and commemorates as actual event (freeing of the last of the slaves in the U.S.). By any measure, the U.S. is the greatest and most just nation in the history of the world. Currently, it's populated by 300 million plus imperfect human beings so it's not perfect either (never has been and never will be); some of our mistakes have been very ugly. The end of an ugly chapter should be something to celebrate.
Perspective: Only 31% of the world is Christian so that means that 69% of the world thinks that Christmas and Easter are "made up."
EVERYTHING above is objectively and verifiably true, but most of y'all won't like it so downvote away.
For the record, I am not African American, and I'm as conservative as anyone here.

Do you only long for the “good ole days” of Jim Crow or do you really want a new Antebellum era when a man still had his right to own chattel with two legs?
Yep, you got me. How did you know?

Problem is they didn’t tell the slaves in Texas until June 19th

Making Juneteenth a holiday (I feel silly even saying Juneteenth) is a tacit admission by the Left that Kwanzaa was a disaster that no one took seriously so a new holiday was needed to perpetuate White guilt and celebrate...I'm not sure what about black people.

This is BS. Dec 6 is when the 13th Amendment was ratified. That would be the day to celebrate the end of black slavery. In reality, Indians had slaves until the 1890s. But if we want to celebrate the end of black slavery Dec 6 would be the day, not the day that Yankee naval officers informed slaves in Galveston that they were free.

Based on a document without any actual effect.
