Gov. Abbott: If spread of COVID doesn’t slow, “the next step will have to be a lockdown”

Abbott spoke to CBS Lubbock this afternoon.
His comments were disheartening.
He said a state economic shutdown is on the table, as is the risk of schools not reopening.

Texas Tribune
quote:

With Texas continuing to break records for new coronavirus deaths and hospitalizations this week, Gov. Greg Abbott reiterated Friday afternoon that things will continue to get worse. And if people keep flouting his new statewide mask mandate, he said, the next step could be another economic lockdown.

“Things will get worse, and let me explain why,” he told KLBK TV in Lubbock. “The deaths that we’re seeing announced today and yesterday — which are now over 100 — those are people who likely contracted COVID-19 in late May.

“The worst is yet to come as we work our way through that massive increase in people testing positive.”

quote:

Texans will also likely see an increase in cases next week, Abbott said, and people abiding by his face mask requirement might be the only thing standing between businesses remaining open and another shutdown.

“The public needs to understand this was a very tough decision for me to make,” Abbott told KLBK of his face mask mandate. “I made clear that I made this tough decision for one reason: It was our last best effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. If we do not slow the spread of COVID-19 … the next step would have to be a lockdown.”

This news comes after Houston Methodist Hospital CEO said yesterday: 'July 4th may have reloaded the gun,' school reopenings at risk (Houston Chronicle)
quote:

“ My theory is that the older population were more careful and conservative," Boom said. "The younger group misheard that if you're young, you will survive this. The younger population have acted with less caution that those over 50, and that's come back to bite us."

Blame Republicans.

You expect this BS from liberals. They're completely fricked in the head, and cynical beyond reason. But what's going on in this country right now (COVID, Schools and BLM) is on Republican politicians and the pacified/pussified Right/Silent Majority.

“And on the Sixth Day, God created the viruses, so that innocent people could die horrible, painful, miserable deaths, as all of their internal organs shut down. And he looked on his creation and he saw that it was good!“

There is a theory we are identifying the virus earlier but the death rate isn’t that different. The deaths are actually 3-4 weeks after contracting vs 1-2 weeks as originally thought. Not sure I buy it but it’s out there. We’ll see if that plays out over the next few weeks.

I've said many times on this board that outside of Ted Cruz, Texas GOP is a joke. Classic Bush RINOS.

They are going to ruin the economy and doom an entire generation of our children over a virus with a less than .3% death rate that targets the elderly and obese.

no, they didnt "mishear" anything

they look at the actual data, the actual numbers reported, and they come to the same conclusion that anybody who isnt a Panic Merchant comes to

If you're young, the odds are disturbingly, overwhelmingly, conclusively in your favor

You will survive this

Its funny this dumb frick thinks he can slow the spread.

It's to late for that.

Wheels can go frick himself.

If he thinks the pussy protests were bad, he's got another think coming.

He needs to get recalled.

The death rate isn't rising at all.

He is out of his mind blaming younger folks for actually going about there lives.

Texans have to be literally done with this guy.

We tested more people today than Mexico has tested.

We will test more people this week than all but 8 countries have ever tested.

Your right. Texas never really had that big surge considering how populated they are.

Goeotgr Floyd protest started the first week of June.... we should see the deaths by now considering how many people were breaking the rules.
