President Donald Trump’s nomination of Thomas Farr for a federal judgeship is likely doomed after a Republican senator said he’ll vote against the North Carolina lawyer whose past work included defending state election laws that courts said discriminated against black voters.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina said in a statement Thursday that a Justice Department memo made public this week "shed new light on Mr. Farr’s activities." As a result, he said, "I concluded that I could not support Mr. Farr’s nomination."

Well then hold the nomination until January. This is not difficult.

Farr also helped defend a 2013 state law that cut the number of early voting days, required photo identification to vote, and eliminated same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting.

The horror.

Scott joins GOP Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, who opposes Farr and also said he’ll oppose all judicial confirmations until the Senate votes on a bill protecting special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian election interference. In addition, all 49 Senate Democrats oppose Farr’s confirmation.

I am so sick of this NC talking point the dems dreamt up.

THERE ARE NO state election laws that courts said discriminated against black voters.

Some activist judge may have said this so the dems could try to steal NC back.

You may need to check your facts on that.

In a blistering decision last July (2016), the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals said the state legislature explicitly set out to discover the kind of accommodations that minority voters use most often and then to roll back or eliminate them, targeting African Americans “with almost surgical precision.”

The "with almost surgical precision" quote came the the actual decision the 4th Circuit rendered in that case.

If not, what did Pence break the tie on a day or two ago?

Yes. The NC legislature put specific language in the law that said the purpose of the statute was so that not as many Black voters would vote.

That sarcasm means Tex can’t answer honestly without deflating his racist position.

Tim Scott will have to answer for that here in SC and, as Lindsey Graham has already found out, Scott is not going to like how we respond here.
